Swansea City transfer plans need to be reviewed now Laird has gone
Monday, 3rd Jan 2022 12:10 by Gruff Stephens

It came out of the blue, and the recall of Ethan Laird to Manchester United means the swans find themselves in an insecure situation in defence, a defence that has already been exposed game after game in the last two months. The swans had a defensive record to be proud of going in to November, and a home record which was admirable. That has all been scuppered and it is now in even more disarray since the news broke on Ethan Laird’s return to his parent club.

Information coming out from the club is scarce to say the least, although with Mark Allen overseeing things with Jake Silverstein in tow you would hope the swans have, or even did have something in place should the worst happen. Money talked last week clearly. Ethan Laird became another player to be recalled in January, and as per Morgan Gibbs-White last year it’s a huge blow. Bournemouth are to be the sole benefactors of this recall, which many clubs now agree to when loaning out players. They have weighed in with a particularly large loan fee to secure Ethan Laird, his salary wasn’t an issue for the swans and it will continue to not be an issue for Bournemouth.

But it’s history. And the swans have to regroup. As stated the sources we have have no knowledge of Plan B, and any reports now would be pure speculation. What has happened is the finance required to replace him will increase. The affect of this on the clubs transfer dealings is obvious. Regardless of the response to Andrew Fisher coming to Swansea, or indeed Harry Darling and Matt O’Riley all of whom are at MK Dons these players are now on hold. That’s the only information we could get. Who is on hold, where they now sit in the financial planning and how Ethan Laird leaving directly affects any transfer will be answered in time. Russell Martin will have to face the press this week, FA Cup pending, so we are certain in his own careful style he will part answer numerous questions.

We understand the reluctance to comment on any matters today and tomorrow, and any news which we have that we have either been asked to hold or report needs careful consideration. There now has to be a review of swans players who could bring in money to Swansea City, it’s a harsh reality that finding a competent player permanently or on loan now is going to take up a lot of time. Where there’s no news to report we have to accept that.

This website has many supporters who we can turn to for well sourced information, but where there is none there is none. No doubt more breaking information will be with us all in a matter of days we can only hope that it’s positive, but the situation the club is in now is clearly going to be reviewed. It’s a shame, but when you lose one of your better players at the back of a poorly functioning defence, it has to take priority.

It is perfectly fine for Man Utd to relocate their player. It does seem a little surprising to me that they gave so little notice of a day or two. They can do what they like of course. Swansea could go for Mengi a talented ball playing centre back who is linked with Birmingham.
