Swansea City striker search to be concluded next week ?
Friday, 14th Jan 2022 08:00 by Gruff Stephens

Russell Martin is happy to go in to Saturdays game with only two recognised first team strikers at Huddersfield after Liam Cullen completed his loan move to Lincoln City. Sources indicate he will have rectified this anomaly by the end of next week after an extensive trawl of the top three divisions in English football.

Going in to one game with Joel Piroe and Michael Obafemi isn’t an issue for Martin who would be playing the two strikers in any event on Saturday. His experimentation with both players against Southampton was a clear indication of his intent for the swans forthcoming games. There has been a loan inquiry for Obafemi but as expected this isn’t a possibility with such low numbers up front.

The only news we have is that Swansea City expect to announce further signings in the coming seven days, and if all goes to plan that will include a new striker and an attacking midfielder. Discussions are already underway with MK Dons for Matt O’Riley, however MK are not keen on losing the player this month. The only way the swans would conclude a transfer would be to pay the required amount for the player which is believed to be around 750k.

Jake Silverstein (pictured) has left Swansea City in good health after his trip to Wales, and from a financial angle has been involved at all levels for the planned transfers in for the rest of the month. Jay Fulton and Yan Dhanda have been told to expedite their leaving of the club this month. Swansea and Fulton have had offers, however he is under contract until 2024 and none of these offers come close to his current salary. Swansea City are keen to see him leave and would allow that to happen now at a price below his value.

Unfortunately Dhanda hasn’t received any concrete interest to date. However, we have all seen how quickly that can change this week already. We have been told the swans are ‘part way’ to concluding a loan deal for a striker, and the same can be said for a midfielder from a premier league side. The club are also in advanced talks for a defender but won’t take the matter further until Jake Bidwell’s situation is resolved at the club. Rhys Williams is still at Swansea and Saturdays squad will reflect Martin’s faith in him to continue his loan spell from Liverpool.

Two players have joined the swans this week, Andrew Fisher for around 400k from MK Dons and Cyrus Christie From Fulham on loan until the end of the season. From what we know the swans want four more players in by the end of the month and of course for the aforementioned Fulton and Dhanda to leave. No doubt more news will be with us today and indeed by Monday.

Things may be moving slowly for some, but January transfer window transactions are said to be the hardest to conclude due to high prices and clubs only shopping because they are keen to bolster their squads. It’s a sellers market for sure.
