Blythe’s spirit wins him a Swansea contract : Summer signing to remain at Swansea
Friday, 11th Mar 2022 14:27 by @Cornish67David

Ben Blythe has impressed Swansea City so much whilst on trial at the club he has been offered a contract from the summer. The twenty year old left sided Doncaster Rovers defender has risen through the academy and has had a brief taste of professional football for his club.

Born in Leeds Ben Blythe will join the swans for a fee, plus clauses and add ons around June 1st this year. As he is out of contract Doncaster have given Blythe permission to train with the clubs under 23 side for the rest of the season. His current club seem delighted to get something back for developing such a young player, then gaining a fee for him. Well behind the pecking order at Doncaster, and by the managers own admission he doesn’t have the physical strength for League one football it seems the swans have seen something in Ben.

His main issue was the time Doncaster could put in to his development to get him to a level where he was ready for full time professional football. Swansea have that time and the training facilities to do that. Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey is fighting relegation and Blythe wasn’t getting anywhere near first team selection so it seems the move will give him time to adjust to the rigours of weekly competitive football. Plus he will be at a club renowned for developing young players.

With only three league appearances in two years, and four for Farsley Celtic on loan in September Blythe comes to Swansea as a utility defender who can also play at centre back as well as on the left side of defence in a four or three.

Welcome to Swansea City Ben.
