Harness gets triggered as Swansea City target gets another year at Pompey

Marcus Harness, Portsmouth’s wanted man by all accounts has had his contract at Pompey triggered to reflect an extra year on his original agreement. This means he can stay at Portsmouth until June 2023. The twenty six year old who has been at Portsmouth for the last three seasons is linked to Swansea City this closed season.

With one hundred and thirty four total appearances and thirty three goals Harness is described as a real asset to his club by manager Danny Cowley. ‘He’s a key player in our team and has brought goals and assists, while he’s equally adept in a number of attacking positions. We know that Marcus has the pace, athleticism and end product to shine beyond this level and he’s a real asset for our club.’

Although Harness has scored goals before it’s only really this season people are taking notice as he enters the prime of his career. His six assists this year have also been noticeable as he seems to now couple his excessive pace with accurate passing. As Cowley says ‘We’re delighted to exercise the option for Marcus — and it was always going to be something that we took up. We want to keep together as many of the group that finished the season as possible. In all of the successful teams I’ve worked with in the past, continuity has been a major factor in that”

Portsmouth are merely protecting their asset in the best way that they can, that’s understandable, it will aid them to achieve a better price for Harness, however they should also be aware that he is very much a hot and cold player. And at league one level. Harness does play in a wider position and enjoys that attacking role. Swansea City do have a player at the club with comparable stats in the same league, Jordon Garrick last season at Plymouth. However, Harness is a far more dangerous player with a higher skill level, and it’s that contribution off the ball that Russell Martin wants.

A figure of around four hundred thousand we believe would secure Harness, however even at that level he is going to be a bit of a risk for next season. And is that what Russell Martin wants with so much reliant on his decision making over the coming weeks ?
