Eight million for Joel Piroe ? Joe Allen surely now wants to return to Swansea !
Friday, 24th Jun 2022 14:08 by Keith Haynes

Joe Allen has turned down a new contract with Stoke City opening up more speculation that his Swansea City move is on the table again. There’s no doubt that the potters offer would have exceeded anything he could get elsewhere. As has already been stated within numerous reports, Swansea City remain in pole position to sign Joe.

The news of his Stoke contract being turned down hasn’t come as a surprise to many Swansea City supporters who still believe players will leave the club this season. That of course is only going to happen if offers matching the clubs valuation are received. Recent speculation on Joel Piroe and Watford is only an inquiry, and from what we hear eight million pounds ‘or so’ is their valuation, that won’t get Joel Piroe away from the swans. In any event why would Piroe move to Watford ? The only reason would be money, it’s obvious since he turned down an opportunity to increase his swans contract finances are key to his future.

Watford don’t offer the possibility of guaranteed success, plus they are a club that changes managers more than any club out there. Many players are bought and then left in reserve with the constant movement of decision makers at Vicarage Road. It’s a move which if he took up, and the fee was agreed, surely has no value to Joel ? Watford are a club not as big as his current employers with a history of instability so common sense states that isn’t within his aspirations ?

In any event Watford will have to increase their intended offer, in fact almost double it to get close to interesting Swansea City. Joe Allen is a different proposition, we are being told more and more that the club have a salary cap on players joining the club this season. Around ten thousand pounds a week is the speculation, and less for players like Nathan Wood and even Harry Darling who joined recently. Joe could be secured within that salary range, he already knows that. His desire to return home has already featured within these pages.

Owain Tudur Jones didn’t have to stick his neck out that much with those comments. Joe’s desire to return to the swans is evident, now on a free transfer and at thirty two he has much to offer Russell Martin. With all this speculation and rumour on Swansea City ins and outs continuing there has to be a breaking point in the clubs finances, but securing Joe Allen surely now is as real as it ever has been.

The swans return from their very successful training camp in Surrey and will bed down in Fairwood as July approaches, and that signals just four weeks before the new season starts. Russell Martin will want things clarified as soon as possible, the club have supported him throughout his time at the swans. So will the swans signal their intent to bring Joe Allen home ? The next week or so will certainly indicate that intention ?
