Eight ‘good’ reasons why Russell Martin is extremely frustrated at Swansea City
Wednesday, 3rd Aug 2022 10:30 by @Cornish67David

There are eight very good reasons why Russell Martin is getting increasingly frustrated this summer, so much so is it really affecting the clubs ability to do business ? That’s what we are led to believe. Russell Martin is slowly learning dramatic turnarounds in a clubs fortunes and playing staff don’t happen overnight. And there’s no more free radical than people.

The reasons as many will see and agree are Brandon Cooper, Jay Fulton, Ryan Bennett, Liam Cullen, Kyle Joseph, Nathanael Ogbeta, Steven Benda and Jordon Garrick. The latter is another quandary for swans fans. However, these players would be better off out of the club than in, and that’s the message we are all surely getting ?

All eight are available for a permanent or loan transfer but matters are not exactly moving forwards. We won’t go into individual situations but every player leaving means leverage to bring players in, especially in the case of Jay Fulton and Ryan Bennett. We all know this, but seeing so many players either being bit part replacements as in Fulton’s case, or just not involved as in Bennett’s case is so frustrating.

Nathanael Ogbeta will forever be the mystery buy this year, a player brought in by ex sporting director Mark Allen who found himself last weekend playing in an unreported friendly at Haverfordwest for the under 21 side. For those that don’t know the swans won 5-2. We should add that appearance was along with Kyle Joseph, who also played. Obviously against that level of opposition both players shone on the day. We are still scratching our heads as to why Kyle Joseph wasn’t at least on the bench at Rotherham United.

That aside, Nathanael Ogbeta has had offers of permanent transfers out of the club, all of which he has turned down. He finds himself even further back in the selection process than Jay Fulton did last season. And for turning those offers down he plays in a friendly at the Bridge Meadow in Haverfordwest. This week there has been a further attempt by a league one club to sign Ogbeta and Russell Martin has made it clear. “I’ve been on to him he knows why he isn’t in the squad. It’s up to him he understands it’s up to him to become a part of the squad at some point and show us he can help us. Or, to assess his situation and see what opportunities lie elsewhere.”

These players, if you are bloody minded are preventing further funding for Martin to bring in more preferred talent into the club. We don’t go with that, they have contracts and have their own decisions to make. Like it or not there is little leeway in those Swansea City coffers and the only way forwards now is possibly one or two loans before the end of the transfer window. Anything else with all these players still at the club is virtually impossible.
