Why would Swansea City loan Michael Obafemi to Burnley ?
Thursday, 26th Jan 2023 14:48 by @Cornish67David

The deal to rid the Swans of Michael Obafemi has been agreed with Burnley and it has to be said it’s a decent agreement between the two clubs. People have been asking why would the Swans do this, and why not just sell him ?

The deal has been struck between the majority ownership with CEO Julian Winter doing their bidding for them. His opposite at Burnley, Chairman Alan Pace via owners ALK Capital managed matters for the clarets. With three million pounds the rumoured fee it now transpires its closer to four million. That’s not bad for everyone all round. In recent times we have directed some criticism towards the clubs ownership, but where there’s praise we will always give it. We don’t just negatively attack anyone like a manager as an example just because we can.

That’s counter productive and not what this site is about.

We’ve spoken to an agent this afternoon who has strong links to this website to try and get a better understanding of this deal so we can maybe see the benefits all round. We are told that although these type of deals are fairly rare in the current financial climate they make perfect sense. It could be Burnley need a bit of time to pay Swansea City, so a structured payment or full payment at the end of the season makes perfect sense. Burnley have already finalised a deal for another striker in Lyle Foster from Westerloo in Belgium. That fee initially is around six million pounds.

With two goal scorers signing in two days that means Ashley Barnes is freed up to leave the clarets. There will be a loan fee or usually a player exchange with these deals, this isn’t deductible in any sell on clause the Swans will need to pay Southampton. That’s deducted from the nominal fee agreed between Burnley and Swansea.

It’s almost certain Swansea haven’t let Obafemi go without some initial cash, and of course now he is at Turf Moor it frees up his salary believed to be around £48,000 a month. So, the Swans move on a troublesome player, they get some financial compensation plus a far bigger fee than expected or maybe a player in exchange ? There’s no news on that at the moment.

These deals are extremely difficult to construct and don’t happen overnight. There are securities that need validating - and within the ‘sale of the player contract’ there has to be further legal agreements regards when the payments are made. This involves bank assurances too.

Burnley get their man, Swansea offload a real troublesome player behind the scenes and everyone is happy. The Swans now have five days to manage the deals they have lined up this week, and there will be players coming in, that’s a certainty even without this deal now being completed in principle.

As we reported as it happened this morning the Swansea City coaching team will breath a sigh of relief now this transfer has been agreed and they can at last move on after a year of ups and downs with Obafemi.

I am none the wiser. Securities? Depending on Burnely getting promoted? Loan to the end of the season and £4m fee dependent on Burnely's promotion? A wait and see deal? .
