No mercy for his old club as Russell Martin wants all three points
Saturday, 22nd Apr 2023 08:10 by Swansea Independent

Ex Norwich City captain and now current Swansea City manager Russell Martin makes his first return back to his old club as a Swan for todays Sky Bet Championship game against the Canaries. ( Kick off 3pm )

Speaking candidly about his return Martin is determined to take the points on his old stomping ground. “There are a lot of people I will look forward to seeing, but when we are there I want to win. I want us to go there and play well. It is a heck of a long way for the Jack Army to travel as we are finding making our own way there. So, we are conscious of that, and the away support we have at this football club is incredible. I really want to win for them, I really want to maintain momentum. Despite the feelings I have for some of the people there, and the memories I have from my time there, this is my job now and I represent an absolutely brilliant football club. This is a brilliant club with brilliant people and we want to win for them.”

The Swans trained at Leicester City’s King Power training grounds yesterday afternoon breaking up their journey to Carrow Road for todays game. This will be the third game is a week as the season a
approaches its final knockings. “This is a three-game week so we have got to be conscious of that, and there may be one or two who have to miss out or are rested with other guys coming into the team. We will assess that again when we train on Friday, but whatever team we put out at the minute, we are in a really good place. Anyone who has come into the team has performed and we have really been excellent. Whether you start or on the bench you have a role to play, and that has really been highlighted these last few weeks. Everyone has contributed hugely.”

Joel Piroe training in Leicestershire yesterday

Joel Piroe is a certain starter in this game, his two goals at home to Preston North End on Wednesday saw the iceman impress again, and his future will always be on the agenda. Martin agrees. "Our main job is to win as many games as we possibly can, the next big remit is to develop young talent and give them an opportunity to play. While it's frustrating that you may end up losing players of Joel's ilk, like Flynn Downes last summer, maybe Joel this summer, who knows, with a year left on his contract we have to accept that may be a possibility. We offered him a contract a while ago, but it's every player's prerogative not to sign that. We're in that situation now and we have to deal with it."

Norwich City v Swansea City kicks off at 3pm today and Swans fans can pay on the day by card only
