Swansea City goalkeeper link dismissed, in fact everything is dismissed …
Tuesday, 2nd May 2023 08:00 by @Cornish67David & Keith Haynes

The Sun has reported that the Swans are interested in Plymouth second choice goalkeeper Callum Burton who has had to step up as a first team regular since Michael Cooper was badly injured earlier on in the year. Seven clean sheets from sixteen games prove Burton’s competency this season, but it seems any Swans interest is rather wide of the mark.

Callum has played those sixteen games for Plymouth at the highest level he has experienced ever in his career this year. Before that he played around thirty five games for Cambridge United in league two. At twenty six he is yet to reach a hundred league games, some of which have been in non league. He has a long loan record in non league playing for Workington, Southport, Salford, Nuneaton and Chesterfield to name a few. In fact he has only completed just over fifty games in league football.

Now, that’s no slight on Burton who has performed incredibly well for Plymouth this season since stepping up to cover for Cooper. The Sun also reported that the Swans have scouted Burton recently. That also holds no water at all. We have been told that Russell Martin is keen to see Steven Benda return as Swansea’s number one with Andy Fisher his only competition next season. In fact the signals from west Wales went along the lines of ‘Why would Swansea recruit a goalkeeper who we believe isn’t as good as what we have ?’

That’s a fair point and we can see only negatives in doing so unless the following scenario presents itself. That has to include Fisher or Benda leaving, which at this point in time is not on the cards, or Morgan Whittaker being sold to Plymouth as a part deal to secure Burton’s services. We will also question the report regards Swansea scouts at recent Plymouth games. Yes, the Swans have a small scouting network, but when the clubs chief scout was meant to be at Plymouth recently he was actually at another game.

In fact the only Swansea face in the crowd at Plymouth we have seen recently is Morgan Whittaker alongside the Pilgrims head of recruitment last week. Good work there from Morgan’s agent. It’s not dissimilar to Shrewsbury Town’s big front man Thomas Bloxham being linked to the Swans. We had a few text messages recently along the lines that he would be joining the Swans from Tottenham Hotspur. This is where a degree of homework has to be done because the only Thomas Bloxham who the Swans would review is in fact at Shrewsbury Town, and he has never kicked a ball for Spurs. Unless you mean the ‘other’ Thomas Bloxham who in fact does or did play for Spurs under 18 last time we looked. Oh no, we mean the guy who had a trial at Blackburn recently ?

You will be telling us there were two Steve McMahon’s next.

Which Thomas Bloxham would you prefer ?

Basically this is where the Swans are at this Tuesday morning. There are no confirmed links to anyone in any league anywhere in the world. The reason for this we are told is that there are no players that Swansea City would consider to be interested in - or as the Daily Mail stated recently to be in ‘a transfer tussle’ with. Yes, the analytical data continues to be collected and the ever evolving process of scouting and watching players continues. But please, there are no links to obscure players called Bloxham at this present time, and definitely nothing in the latest goalkeeper rumours.

Things do change, we all know that, but let’s be honest there’s still one more game to go yet before a month of closed season is upon us. Only of course in anticipation of the transfer window opening on June 10th. The club continues to watch, look and listen but with a change now coming at the top of the recruitment tree, no moves, and nothing firm will happen until that position is filled and the new man is well bedded in.
