Striker latest : Not that keen to leave Swansea City
Tuesday, 22nd Aug 2023 09:07 by Keith Haynes

Swansea City striker Liam Cullen has been linked with a move away from Swansea City, he has been with the club for most of his life joining at the age of eight.

With two new strikers already in this season Liam has yet another fight on his hands to display his credentials to head coach Michael Duff. Liamā€™s time at Swansea has always been a scrap for attention, but it was last season his efforts came to fruition. Russell Martin recognised his desire and included him on thirty occasions with a nine goal return. That has alerted other clubs to his availability especially with Joel Piroe and Jerry Yates ahead of him in the pecking order. Plus the Swans have signed Mykola Kuharevich from Troyes. Far from demoralised Liam has featured for the Swans this season setting up Jerry Yates for his debut goal against Birmingham City.

What do we know ?
There were two clubs linked with Liam last week. Hull City and Stoke City. We know that the Hull City link was incorrect, their manager Liam Rosenior has no interest in Liam Cullen whatsoever. That seems pretty much the case today. Stoke City havenā€™t made an approach for Liam, in fact no club has. Conversely Liam who is a local lad coming from just down the road in Kilgetty is more than happy at the Swans, and is extremely settled in the area. He isnā€™t at all fussed at this moment in time, if the status quo remains - then so be it.

Why now ?
This latest news is obviously the work of others away from Liam Cullen. Although he has a year left on his contract there is the option for a one year extension. You canā€™t blame people wanting to include Liamā€™s name in the big mix now the transfer window closing is getting closer. The thing the player needs to be aware of is he is twenty five next birthday. Yes, a fair way to go before he thinks of his next options inside or outside the game. His current salary at Swansea is very much in the lower echelons of the clubs pay structure, and we do know he would jump at the chance of a new and improved contract which would keep him at Swansea for as long as possible.

There will be interest in Liam now outside influences have alerted clubs as to his contractual status. However, it will take a lot to get him to move from Swansea City, a club he has been at for sixteen years. Plus he would be going in to an environment that is new and most certainly different to what he knows currently. Finance of course has a wonderful effect on people at times. For now Liam is happy to fight his corner and stand toe to toe with a variety of strikers at the club. The current Wales international has his best years ahead of him, but with less than a hundred games under his belt at the age he is there must be something in the back of his mind asking the question ā€˜ Can I leave my mark better elsewhereā€™ ? As much as the Swans must mean to him, thereā€™s a big world out there, and a lot more money to earn than he is currently on at Swansea thatā€™s for sure.
