Michael Duff : My job is not to win the fans over !
Wednesday, 20th Sep 2023 08:10 by Keith Haynes

In addition to the official slant placed on last nights game at Loftus Road Swans head coach Michael Duff disclosed he has spoken to the people at the top of the club. Disclosing he has had contact with the majority ownership and Chairman Andrew Coleman as his position as Swans head coach becomes more precarious, Duff seemed unconcerned.

After another disappointing result against a very poor QPR Duff explained he has had numerous conversations over the last few days. "My job's not to win the fans over. My job's to win games. If they've made their mind up, they've made their mind upā€ That will be seen by some as a flippant remark after seven league games and no wins in this seasons Championship campaign. With three points from twenty one on offer he said, "It's about sticking to the process. You build teams on foundations, on solid foundations, on non-negotiables, and then you can build on the other stuff. I'm not naive enough to forget that I haven't won a game yet. But if people have already made their mind up, they've already made their mind upā€

That comment came after he was met with a majority vote from the travelling Swans support that the performance they had witnessed was just not good enough. In fact the previous six games when evaluated with last nights game was indeed not good enough at all. For some reason Duff mentioned text messages from the majority ownership and Andrew Coleman, however he didnā€™t elaborate on the content of those messages.

Possibly if Saturdays game doesnā€™t go to plan we will find out ?

We have said already this week that Duff is no mug when it comes to football management, his track record speaks for itself. However, at Championship level he has yet to earn a win, and the season to date which has resulted in those three points isnā€™t favoured by the majority. References to stats and again as to the clubs progress last season are wearing thin, and Duff knows he is really on the brink this morning. "All I can ask today is that the players give me everything. I think when the final whistle blew and there's five or six dropping to floor because they've given absolutely everything. That's the starting point for meā€

It has to be said that that may well be the case, but from the stands it seemed that the players were dropping to the floor from complete dismay having thrown away three points that were well within their grasp. They may well have run hard and contributed to what was a pretty poor game of football, but thereā€™s little to resemble a side worthy of congratulations after that performance. ā€œI thought we started the game very well, we controlled it, passed it and hurt them in different ways and caused them different problems. We played through them, we played around them and we played over them, which was what we wanted it to look like. We scored a good goal, but any Gareth Ainsworth team will make it tough for youā€

Swans fans will be alarmed at that assessment as not a lot of that was evident throughout the game. QPR were there to be beaten and the second half performance was pretty dire despite the effort Duff talks about. He also made reference to passing - and practising that part of their game to be better. Of all the things this Swansea side needs to do surely after the ā€˜extremeā€™ passing way we witnessed for two seasons that is not high in the agenda ? Of course, we havenā€™t seen it this season, and that falls down to the manager and his tactics. If anything this Swans side still has the players to dominate the ball and do exactly what Duff believes they need to work on ?
