Joel Piroe : 25k a goal was a great deal for the Swans
Sunday, 6th Apr 2025 15:09 by Keith Haynes

Joel Piroe left Swansea City back in August 2023, it was for an initial ten and a half million pounds Everyone saw it coming and nobody was surprised. Andrew Coleman (Chairman from May 8th that year) hung on to his high value players in the main to create a financial illusion of competence. It also of course assisted profit and sustainability (P&S) rules overall.

The club sold millions of pounds of players that summer to support the club and its financial plight. A few deals had to be constructed so P&S would work positively as well over the coming seasons. Appearance caveats, promotion clauses (that two million pounds Leeds promotion bonus) and numerous others were applied to Joel Piroe’s transfer fee. Including part payments that obviously illustrate that the initial fee wasn’t as high as people nearly always think. These were areas that outgoing Chairman, Andrew Coleman and ex Sporting Director, Paul Watson worked well on.

The term ‘rising up to’ should never be dismissed in any transfer report, that is if the clubs involved agree to any real disclosure of some of the terms and conditions. That’s an agreement in itself. We are always looking for new angles on Swansea City news, and despite having this current information for quite a while there’s always the right time to disclose it. The source of that information moving on from their original role or at times an open agreement to report this type of news from the players representatives over time. In fact it can be for a variety of reasons, as in this case. An initial insignificant rumour becomes more significant with research and as today we find no compromise for any source when reporting this.

One add on to the initial deal was the appearance and goals scored agreement between Leeds United and Swansea City. This was a part of Paul Watson’s work alongside Andrew Coleman in August 2023. The Swans have received £25,000 for every goal scored with appearances (of course) up to an agreed limit since Piroe left the Swans. The caveat within that is that there is a ceiling, that when reached, the payments stop. This season to date Piroe has scored fifteen goals in the Championship. Last season he bagged thirteen leaving him today on twenty eight Championship goals all told. Multiply that by the £25k a goal and it’s in and around £700,000.

We believe that the threshold for no further payments has now been reached over the past few seasons, that is if the Swans couldn’t agree on a basic scoring tally per season over his four year contract. Irrespective of that the money is the same, there is a ceiling regardless of how you work it out. As we stated these agreements are hard to define exactly, after all we don’t have sight of Piroe’s contract, and you only find out these things by asking. They are never offered to you. At times you don’t get the information you want, but can always pick up guidance, assistance or be pointed in the right direction on other matters.

For us that how good journalism works.

What we don’t know in full is the two million promotion clause. People are citing that this season is the last one where if Leeds get promoted the Swans get the money. Without actual confirmation as in this latest news we can’t say for sure that this is the case. Piroe’s contract runs over four years and we are now approaching the end of year two. We will try and find out of course, but it’s this afternoons news we hope you find of interest. It’s why we love writing for you on Swansea Independent. And thanks for your support as ever, you have elevated this website to the largest, most visited Swans fans website there is.

Having bonuses for the performance of competitors is not healthy. Say for example if Leeds needed to win the last game of the season at Swansea . It this case Swansea would have a £2m bonus to lose. The beauty of the UK game and particularly the championship is no one can be taken for granted.
