QPR 1 Swansea City 2 : Can Sheehan be ignored any longer ?
Monday, 21st Apr 2025 19:14 by Colin Thomas

Swansea City continued their incredible form with five wins on the bounce and only one goal conceded over that period. There was some defending to do at the end but really QPR didn't deserve anything from this game. Their tactics were pretty over the top making their own momentum hard to gain due to their persistent infringements.

The juices were flowing form the off in this encounter. A sell out away following of 2,350 had made the trek with many of the London Swans noticed at the game. The Swans were down in West London and were very noisy indeed. It was the usual midfield battle for the Swans, try and win that early on and then dictate the pattern of play. However, three times in the opening five we saw long balls down the flanks to both Eom and Ronald but none of them found their man.

Ronald’s control was letting him down which did break up play.

On seven minutes the home side had a free kick out on the Swans right. The ball was swung in by QPR but it was easy pickings for Liam Cullen to clear. Ronald again messed up an opportunity to get a dangerous ball into the box on nine minutes. He needed to perform in this game, the inconsistency is frustrating. We got ten minutes with little of any consequence to report on other than the Swans were slowly getting to grips with the midfield.

On twelve minutes we saw the first corner of the game given to Swansea. Out on their left after excellent work between Eom and Josh Tymon. That set piece flew across the area with everyone missing the ball. As we approached the first third of the half the Swans put a nice move together winning the ball back and pressing forwards. They were most certainly the better side. Fouling was also an R’s tactic both on Eom and Ronald. The home crowd were baying for yellow cards as if it was the only way they were going to level up the game. Overall it hadn’t really caught light and on twenty minutes the pattern of play and the game wasn’t dissimilar to Friday against Hull City.

Nobody was really getting the game by the scruff of the neck.

The ball was being won, the ball was being lost, QPR fouled a lot, the referee blew up, and got quite tetchy with the players on the pitch. A free kick for the R’s on the Swans left on twenty four minutes was well placed but Vigouroux in the Swans goal easily gathered. This really wasn’t a good game of football. In fact it was so average when Ronald crossed and again it was poor, attempting to retrieve the ball he bought himself a free kick. Eom would take it. Josh Key helped and it all ended up with QPR getting the ball.

On twenty nine minutes it seemed as if Josh Tymon had enough of the game. He burst forwards with a blistering run crossing for Cullen who managed to get a touch on the ball and guide it into the R’s net. The man who has supplied the most chances in the Championship was at it again. Just after the goal was announced QPR’s Archer was complimented with an own goal. That may well,go,to the ‘who did what’ panel.

1-0 the Jacks.

And the large Swans support sang ‘Alan Sheehan, we want you to stay’

On thirty one minutes the home side had a corner on the Swans right. It was a cheeky corner, a grass cutter which was cleared by the Swans. The away side continued their pressure and more fouling on Ronald ensued. Then a free kick, Tymon and Eom stood over the ball as they often do. It was a good cross by Eom, QPR cleared and Cullen just missed the last row at the back of the upper tier. A booking for Harrison Ashby on forty minutes for blocking Ronald, fully deserved. We did need to see more of Lewis O’Brien and Franco that would certainly stamp the Swans class on this game, maybe second half eh ?

Anything the R’s threatened the Swans cleaned up. Cullen had a shot on forty four minutes leading to a corner on their right. It was decent but evaded everyine on standby in the area. The referee brought the game to a first half close, the Swans went in one up but it could have been more. We needed to see a more positive slant on the second half. QPR are not a good team. But a one goal lead away from home is very slender.

The second half stated with no changes, but we should now be bearing in mind that QPR have scored twelve goals this season via substations. The home crowd were very subdued, but the away supporters were not. The home side seemed happy playing head tennis and gaining any advantage by keeping the ball in the air. The Swans were happy early on to feed off the R’s mistakes, the ball so high in the air they were making a hash of it. The Swans were not getting away with their own play being pretty bad especially in the passing department. Giving away the ball as much as the home side.

A lovely run by Tymon linking with O’Brien led to a corner on the Swans left on fifty minutes. Tymon took it, Harry Darling met the ball but it went over the bar with the centre back appealing for a corner. On fifty four minutes a decent free kick from the Tymon and Eom casebook went on to cause problems in the R’s defence. It led to a lovely move across the QPR area linking Cullen, Franco and Eom who rifled a dangerous cross in to the six yard box for Josh Key to scramble the ball into the home net. From there the Swans pressed again, they wanted more. A cross box header by Ronald led more pressure on QPR. Eom just failed to get purchase on the ball. Then Eom in on goal but ruled offside. The same followed for Franco after a lovely ball from Darling. This was the dominance we wanted to see in the first half.

One more goal and QPR were a done deal.

However, as the sixty minute mark passed us by QPR seemed to find some momentum. They were now pressing higher and getting more of the ball. These phases of possession are to be expected. The Swans needed to remain composed and assured. Evidence of the home sides inability to play football came even when they had a few minutes on top. Hauling down Swansea players which stopped their momentum. And then a few subs by QPR were made. Alan Sheehan seemed happy to stick with the players he chose from the off. Sixty seven minutes gone and no indication of a change.

On seventy one minutes substitute Dembele ran onto a decent pass. Tymon and Darling couldn’t cut him off and his shot went in off the Swansea post. That was 2-1. More changes for QPR with Chair always a danger man entering the field of play. We had seventeen minutes left to play. From the off Tymon made a bag of mince of possession. It meant more possession for the home side. QPR were reinvented it seemed. However, Vigouroux and Tymon needed attention after colliding. The home crowd beside themselves. More fouls were now being conceded by the Swans. Dembele a problem with his pace but they were still standing firm. A wonderful Ronald cross into the home sides area was met by Eom who made contact with a flying header. It just wasn’t enough to score.

Then a QPR corner on seventy nine minutes with Eom down and injured. It looked pretty bad with him failing to get up off the pitch. As the crowd sung ‘Let him die’ Dai went for a cup of coffee. Then some Swansea changes. Vipotnik and Ollie Cooper on, Cullen and xxxx off. Then Fulton was in the wars. On eighty five Joe Allen came on for Franco as did Delcroix We coukd only hope the added eight minutes wouldn’t be too nervy. The Swans were taking their time, even at free kicks. The away side were six minutes away from another win. Delcroix played it safe as WPR came forwards. It would be a long throw in to the Swansea penalty area. Ronnie Edwards took the throw on the pitch . The Swans now had a throw in the same place. This was now one of those must not put a foot wrong end to the game.

We had two minutes to go.

Ronald did get forwards after a lovely ball from O'Brien but his cross was blasted over.

Then with all of the added on minutes completed QPR had a dangerous free kick on the Swans left. It was dealt with and on ninety nine minutes and at last the game was brought to a close. This was another excellent win by Sheehan’s Swans, and that’s exactly what they should be called, but permanently.
