Matt the Swans fan from the USA : At the game today in Swansea for the first time
Saturday, 6th Dec 2025 08:00 by Keith Haynes

Swansea Independent subscriber and social media follower, Matt Latham is on his first trip to Swansea this morning. A quest for him over the last fourteen years of following Swansea City. We had a chat with Matt who will be at the Oxford United game today.

He hails from Oklahoma City which he describes as an underdog town of working class people.

That explains why he was attracted to Swansea City FC. All Jacks start somewhere and his story is as follows. “ I’ve been a fan of Swansea since 2011. Growing up in the states, you don’t have any natural allegiance. I had played the sport since I was 3 years old and felt it was time to pick a team. Many of my friends were Arsenal, Chelsea or Man U fans but I hate the idea of jumping on a bandwagon just because it’s a big club.”

“The more Swansea matches I watched, the more I became a fan and enjoyed the style of play. Appreciate the involvement of the supporters trust as well. I would be lying though if I hadn’t had that question pop up a lot since we came from Oklahoma to England to watch a few matches. We’ve been in England since the 29th November and head back on the 10th December. Went to Liverpool at West Ham then Chelsea at Leeds and now the crown jewel for me getting to see my team at home. I’ve traveled other parts of Europe and internationally but this is my first time to the United Kingdom. Naturally, I couldn’t make the trip without hitting up Swansea. We actually don’t get to Swansea until tomorrow morning. ( today) We leave on the 8th to London then back across the pond to Oklahoma.”

How people fall in love with the Swans is always a great story. When we ran the ‘Midlands Avon & Gloucester Swans’ which started in 1992 so many of our members were not Welsh. Many not from the city, in fact from all over the place, which shows the draw once people fall in love with a football club.

We hope Matt and his family have a great day out and our team can reward him with three golden points against an in form Oxford side. Thanks Matt.
