Swansea City v Middlesbrough : Match day morning and latest news

The Swans are at home this evening for their fixture against promotion chasing Middlesbrough (5.30pm) It’s Easter Monday where the Championship still supplies a raft of important matches affecting both the top and bottom of the league. (Full list below and how to watch)

The Swans have injuries to contend with, not least Ethan Galbraith and Josh Key leaving a big gap at right back for Matos to again manage. He does have Joel Ward as back up but he is still recovering from the demands of his efforts against Sheffield United on Good Friday. We do know he has had some exacting treatment to give him every chance of playing. Other than that there is an option of Sam Parker who was on the bench as an unused substitute on Friday.

Adam Idah (below) hit back at his critics the only way a goalscorer can by turning the game at Sheffield United with a goal and an assist. Credit to goes to Jay Fulton who played his part in clawing back a two goal deficit in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Gwyn Stato informs us that the referee today Matthew Donahue has been a card happy chappy at the stadium. In his seven games officiating the Swans he has given out thirty three yellow cards. Swansea winning three and losing three of those seven games. Donahue hasn’t officiated the Swans this season but has issued 109 yellow cards and 8 reds. And that’s from just twenty seven fixtures.

That will concern any football fan.

Boro have their issues, they see this as a must win after being defeated at home to fellow automatic promotion challengers, Millwall on Friday. Head coach, Kim Hellberg walked into a ready made squad tuned for promotion when he arrived in November last year. Since then he has a 50% win rate (12 games won) with seven losses and five draws. That isn’t going to elevate Boro into the automatic places by the end of the season.

Something has to change. However they are right on the shoulders of Millwall despite their loss to them a few days ago.

When we look at the Swans there really is not a lot in this league. Despite their league position and if the results flow the Swans way (if they win) they could well rise a fair few places up the table. As you can see. Swansea are thirteen points from the relegation spots, job done there. Now, with eleven points being the gap to sixth (and the play offs) that ship of hope has very much sailed now. We do know Vitor Matos wants a top ten finish this season. It’s still possible to achieve that, but today we need to see a win before the game at Leicester City this coming Saturday (3pm)

The Swans still have a healthy league position on home soil despite their defeat against Coventry City last weekend. Still, when the chances are reviewed from that game, plus defensive errors and chances missed that could have been so different. That penalty given to Coventry was very dubious, the player half way down before Ben Cabango made contact. We won’t dwell for too long on the Eom misdemeanour but that led to another goal which could have been avoided. The two chances which saw the Swans hit the frame of the goal really did sum up the finishing of this side this season.

On the Boro injury front we can confirm Hayden Hackney, Morgan Whittaker and Leo Castledine are all out despite reports to the contrary yesterday.

Hellberg has said: "They are not going to play on Monday. Hopefully a week or two for them. And of course it’s a blow. Hayden's the best player in the league and Morgan is our top goalscorer. So of course they are missed, and Leo's been showing what he can do. So of course this was as bad preparation as you can get, with six players away as well. But, I'm proud of the performance and what the players did. There’s nothing I can say to them in terms of what they didn't do. They fight, they run, they try to be brave and they play. I think they do everything they can, so that’s on me and I have to do it better."

Have a great day off, get along and watch the Swans !
