The Swansea Independent ‘end of season’ Tip Top Awards !
Thursday, 16th Apr 2026 17:27 by Rhys Clayton : @AustrianJacks

The season is not quite over, but the awards shortlists are already out. Our starman Zan Vipotnik was rightly nominated for the Championship Player of the Season, but what are some of the other deserving - or some cases undeserving - accolades this season.

⚽️ Unsung Hero Award: Cameron Burgess

This is an easy one. Step forward Cameron Burgess. The centre-back is the only Championship outfield player to have played every minute of the league this season. Four other players have achieved this feat in goal, including our very own Lawrence Vigouroux, ex-Swan Carl Rushworth, Middlesbrough's Solomon Brynn, and Oxford's Jamie Cumming. I know Burgess gets a lot of criticism from the fanbase for his lack of finesse, some of which goes overboard, but he has been a stable presence in an unstable season, and helped us see out many slender wins. A particular highlight was the double against Nottingham Forest in the Leauge Cup, while his lowlight was the double own-goal home game against his former team Ipswich in early November. A very honourable mention to his centre-back partner Ben Cabango, who has only missed 15 minutes all season (in the opening game against Middlesbrough), but Burgess gets it for the 10 extra international games for Australia this season. His air miles must be off the charts.

⚽️ Consistency Award: Josh Tymon

While Cameron Burgess is consistently available, he isn't always in performance. Josh Tymon delivers both. Arriving in late summer of 2023, he has already racked up 135 appearances for the Swans. A handful of those games would have been 5/10 performances, with the majority coming in at 7 or 8. He is the perfect Championship full-back, in that he is very balanced between attack and defence, rarely beaten for pace or in one-on-one situations, a great engine, and by all accounts a level-headed, unflustered character. Probably his biggest strength is his fantastic crossing. Since Matos came we have finally started scoring from set-pieces, and it is a mystery why it took so long when you have the quality of Tymon, and he is now on nine assists for the campaign. Oh, and he scored what I think was the goal of the season (or indeed the goal of the Liberty era) against Oxford United in December.

⚽️ Most Frustrating Player Award: Ronald

There could be many nominations for this award, but I will go for the much maligned Ronald. It is another player who has featured in every league game this season (over 100 in a row and counting...), but who has not scored a goal since all the way back in September, and just three assists since the turn of the year. The frustrating part comes from the fact that there is talent there - talent he showed when he first moved to the club in January 2024, and even this season he started with four goals in six games. This will be the end of his second full season here, and the returns continue to diminish. Even if fans want him sold, there won't be any takers at the price the Swans will demand. In all likelihood, he will be there next season as a squad player, especially if Matos thinks to keep using Widell or maybe even Key as wingers. Plus it is surely an area we will look to invest in. No one saw the Vipotnik transformation coming this season. Unlikely as it may be, I would not totally write off Ronald doing the same next year.

⚽️ Moment of Madness Award: Ben Cabango v Hull

Once again, in quite a crowded field of contenders, Ben Cabango's handball away against Hull City in January takes the biscuit. I've just watched it back again several times and I still have no idea what's going through his brain. The Tigers have a free-kick about 40 yards from goal on the right-side. Amir Hadziahmetovic lofts a ball in - not a bad ball at all, nicely splitting the area between the penalty spot and the 6-yard box, but hardly a vicious, dipping cross with imminent danger. Cabango is between two attackers, maybe he loses his sense of how close the Hull man behind him is, and decides the best course of action is to fist-pump the ball away. The referee gives the clear penalty, and of course Oli McBurnie scores. I am sure Cabango himself won't be able to explain his thinking. Some mistakes are unlucky - this wasn't one of them.

⚽️ Best and Worst Moments: Wrexham x2

As mentioned above, an unstable season is likely to have many good and bad moments. Losing our rivals down the road to League One gave us many laughs but robbed us of a narrative. Thankfully the North Wales upstarts stepped in admirably to fill the void, and provided us with a focal point to direct our ire. After losing five games on the spin in November, we were in the bottom three, and barely out of it when Wrexham came to town. A sell-out Friday night crowd in front of the Sky cameras produced a tight, feisty, thrilling game. Adam Idah pounced on keeper Arthur Okonkwo's shocking error in goal in the 90th minute to send the Jacks wild. The third home win in a row was a signal to come for the very strong home form under Matos. The antithesis to this was the insipid, uninspiring away defeat one month ago. After beating Portsmouth away in the week, another Friday night game against the Dragons gave us the chance to apply huge pressure to their 6th place position. Those hopes came to nothing after a passive first-half saw us go in trailing one-nil at the break, and a late Cullen own goal sealed the misery. The Sky Sports circus and online animosity only added to the dejection.

⚽️ Am I Dreaming? Award: Snoop is a Jack

I doubt any generation of Swans fan has seen anything more mad than that Preston game. The Snoop hype was nothing I have ever experienced in 20 years of following my team. When your 90-year-old Nanna is asking you about this West Coast rapper, you know something is happening. I am a fully signed-up member of Cynics Associated but even I was swept up in the madness. Snoop's favourite NFL team is the Pittsburgh Steelers, whose "Terrible Towel" is a rally towel that has grown in their fan culture. Maybe we will adopt this in the future as Manchester City fans have adopted the Poznan from Lech Poznan. It generated plenty of crowing down the road, but it should be pointed out that their most recognisable fan symbol is named after the highest-ranking Shia cleric in Iran. The first-half against Preston was abysmal but the late equalising goal from Liam Cullen was a fantastic moment. The photo of Snoop with Cullen in the dressing room afterwards, with accompanying video of him asking Snoop to sign it like an exciting teenager, was just perfect. The image of the season.
