Trunds returns to beat Chris Iwelumo in hard fought win
Saturday, 18th Apr 2026 08:00 by Swansea Independent

Lee Trundle returned to the ring last night to fight Chris Iwelumo at the Trinity hotel in Liverpool. Fighting for The Children’s Charity Merseyside and Autism Merseyside his three rounds were pretty spectacular.

Entering the ring with a large Swansea City badge on his ring gown and also on his shorts Lee was described as a ‘Swansea legend’ as he entered the ring.

The first round may well have gone to Iwelumo but taking advice from Tony Bellew during his ten weeks training running up to this bout Trundle remained calm. He was stable and less offensive than he was in the first ‘night to remember’ back in October 2025 where he was defeated by the enormous ex Spurs player, Anthony Gardiner. The judge giving the fight to Gardiner after three hard rounds.

Last night Lee was so different in his approach and strategy. Under the guidance of Enzo Maccarinelli at his gym in Bonymone and cornerman, Josh Kaighin on the night he looked very much the part. Despite Chris (who is two years younger than Lee) causing a stir in the first forty five seconds or so Trundle was right on it with an effective jab. That took its toll on his opponent slowly sapping his strength on the second round and hardly on his feet at the end of the third. Both fighters were in good condition, Trundle looking exceptionally fit and conditioned, as did Iwelumo. Testament to their hard training regime and commitment to do their bit, this bout was without doubt the fight of the night.

The night was all about charity, and charity won. The audience had a vast amount of celebrities in attendance and for Lee his hard work paid off. Lee who is fifty in October may well decide to finish his boxing career on a high, this his second win to go with his loss. Whatever he decides you can be certain that he fully deserved this win, the crowd were rooting for him and it was a deserved victory.

The big match is covered from 11am today.
