London Marathon : A Jack in the race, and the long road behind him
Sunday, 26th Apr 2026 10:27 by Swansea Independent

Sean Morgans is close to completing his dream of running the London marathon today after months of preparation and long and lonely training sessions. (Not entirely of course, he is a 3M Gorseinon Runner) These are the heroes, often unsung who endeavour to raise as much cash as possible, and Sean is one of those heroes. And so he should be, he’s a Jack !

⚽️ Sean Morgans
I'm 55 years old and I've been supporting the swans since 17th May 1985 when my best mate Adrian asked me to go to the last game of the season.. Bristol City I believe, John Bond was in charge and I remember Jimmy Rimmer in goal having made some crucial saves. We needed a point or it was relegation, and we drew 0-0.. I was hooked and paid £15 for my first ever season ticket the next season. Since then I hardly missed a game at the old Vetch. Out of the 20 seasons at the liberty, I've had a season ticket for 19, the only season I didn't get one because of work commitments, was the Championship season before we got to the promised land. Typical!!!!.

I've even got my 75 year old mother to have her first ever season ticket this season. In relation to running, I've been an on/off runner since school but have only been doing it more regularly in the last 10 years. I’ve run the Swansea half marathon. Since then I've done several of them including the Great North run in September 2025 ,London Landmarks in 2022 and a few Swansea and Cardiff too. My dream thigh has always been to complete one London marathon in my lifetime. A bucket list wish since I was 18, and since that time I've applied for a London ballot place 26 times. All failed.

This changed when I joined 3M Gorseinon runners club which has given me the running bug that I never had on my own. This opened up an opportunity to run the 2025 London marathon for a local cancer charity, kids cancer charity based in Cockett. This was both incredible and terrifying as the furthest I've run before training was 13.1 miles. I had great training plan and by April 2025 I was ready to run in the race I've always wanted to run in. There was an issue though. I wasn’t feeling my best and it had a devastating affect on me as I went round the course. I had to pull out. I went to the doctors the next day and they took blood tests where it was confirmed I had glandular fever. Absolutely typical ! The Doc even commented, “How the hell did you do 15 miles with glandular fever” as it totally wipes most people out. I couldn't run for a while and was bed bound for just under a week and the thought of competing in another marathon was not even worth contemplating. However, after a couple of months, I realised I had an itch I still needed to scratch. So I put on for another London marathon ballot. And you guessed it, failed again ! It was time to dust myself down and look at more charity options. I had raised just over £3000 for kids cancer charity which was brilliant but I wanted to look at a different charity that would maybe classed by some as an '' unfashionable'' charity.

I spent a lot of time looking at different charities offering places, and even then your not guaranteed a place even if you say you'll raise the minimum amount. Anyway, I looked at SENSE. This is a national charity that supports people with deaf blindness or other complex disabilities to communicate, experience the world and to fulfill their potential. This includes generating social connections for people which reduces loneliness and isolation, providing education and skills to 16-25 year olds to learn skills to live independently to support this community. I applied to raise funds for them and feel very privileged to raise a minimum of £2250. (but hopefully more).

Sean Morgans is a different type of fund raiser, a man who is closer to sixty than fifty has that desire to put himself forwards to benefit others. The London marathon has stated, and is televised across several networks.

Come on Sean !
