Swans v Addicks : ‘Four from SE7’ Out of the Valley …

On Saturday the Swans host Charlton Athletic for the final game of the season. A win could potentially see the club go from 11th to 10th place in the final standings, and a loss could result in the Swans slipping down to 14th.

First there’s a bit of business to be done.

The Addicks have just secured their Championship place for next season. Their last game-week saw a 2-1 win over Hull City. This helped guarantee Oxford's relegation. There is always a different and special type of excitement for the last game of the season. Both sides wish for pleasant winds in their sails heading into next season, and the atmosphere is usually great. Here are 4 players that are particularly interesting from Charlton Athletic:

They have had a great season.

⚽️ Lloyd Jones - Without a shadow of a doubt Lloyd Jones is Charlton’s best player. The 30 year old English centre half has won back to back player of the year awards at the club and has been the most crucial piece in both promotion and in securing safety this year. Standing at 190 cm (6’3) Jones is a towering defensive beast. He has phenomenal defensive stats almost across the board, and his duel winning percentage and duels won are particularly scary. He will be tasked to stop the best striker in the league as Vipotnik tries to build on his already historic season. Jones will be a tough task for the Slovenian and it’s a battle I’m looking forward to. If Jones stars he will also have played in all 46 games this season, something he could share with Cameron Burgess. Despite his defensive excellence Jones isn’t perfect and has a weakness when it comes to his passing, at least according to the stats. He has an outstandingly low successful passes percentage of 75%. Matos’ high press should really look to punish Charlton’s player of the season.

⚽️ Jayden Fevrier - This is one to look at particularly for Swansea fans as I believe the 23 year old has a profile we need. The English loanee played 28 games for play-off fighting Stockport in League One before joining Charlton on loan this January. Fevrier is an effective dribbler and is statistically very efficient with his crosses. He is also quite prone to playing bad passes however, Charlton has the second lowest average possession in the league so there is no surprise they don’t have the most pass-accurate individuals. Fevrier impressed in the last game against Hull, scoring a brilliant goal and that performance had led to some Charlton fans calling for his permanent signature.

⚽️ Conor Coady - It’s hard to look at Charlton’s XI and not think Conor Coady stands out the most. If he starts tomorrow he would have more Premier League appearances than all other players combined, bar the Swans Joel Ward. Last summer Wrexham signed Coady from Leicester on a two year deal, but the 33 year old failed to impress in north Wales and went out on loan to seek more playing time. Since joining Charlton he has made 16 appearances, primarily as a six in Charlton’s 3-5-2 formation. Coady has been quite good for the Addicks and grabbed an assist against Hull last week.

⚽️ Charlie Kelman - I’ve chosen four Englishmen to highlight here and Kelman for me is the most interesting one. Last year he was banging in goals for Leyton Orient, winning the golden boot with 21 goals. It’s safe to say his move to Charlton so far has been a let down. The Addicks signed the 23-year old for supposedly £3,5 million, but he has only managed 7 goals in the Championship with performances, especially at the start of the season being poor. Kelman is a nifty striker and can be very dangerous on his day, something Charlton fans have seen more of recently. Kelman had one of his better games for Charlton against Hull where he scored an absolutely incredible goal. He will be confident heading into the season finale.

I’ve highlighted two defensive and two offensive players, but it’s the Addicks defensive ability that have kept them in the league this year. They’ve struggled all season with scoring, only Blackburn and Wednesday have been worse, but Kelman and Fevrier scored great goals on Saturday and will look to continue that form in south Wales. Swansea are up for it though, and I expect a fun end to the season. Uppa Swans !

Lloyd Jones was born in Plymouth o a Welsh father. He was in the welsh youth system while a teenager in Liverpool and is one of the surprisingly few Welsh eligible players who turned his back on the Dragons. Jonathan Bond a goalkeeper was another. He had a long career in the lower leagues and the USA. There is a lot of Polish eligible players in the welsh youth system. 4 or 5 in both Swnsea and Cardiff.
