EFL Championship

Swans v Addicks : Nathan Jones ‘It really hasn’t been too long’
Friday, 1st May 2026 21:19 by Swansea Independent

Swansea City play their final game of the season tomorrow lunchtime when they take on Charlton Athletic. Pride is the reward and for the Swans maybe, dependent on results a top ten finish. The last time the club did that was under Russell Martin when the Swans finished three points off the play offs.

That’s the measure each season it seems, finish on sixty nine points or around about there and you could find yourself playing off over two matches to get a one off final place at Wembley. Under Martin the Swans finished on sixty six with a positive goal difference. It was that close. Had he guided the side to one more win the pain would have been greater than it was for Blackburn Rovers that year. They finished in seventh level on points with sixth place Sunderland.

None of that drama for either side tomorrow, Charlton secured their Championship safety last weekend and Nathan Jones is looking forward to the game. "It is very difficult; I don’t want to play it down. We don’t just celebrate staying up but making sure that we are a Championship team next year means that we can keep moving forward, If we didn’t, it is very difficult to bounce back when you take a step back. Have we made it hard for ourselves ? Yes, we have. There were four home games that we lost on the spin, that could have gone either way, we should have had significantly more points, which I feel would be a reflection of where we are as a Championship team. If you look at where we are, and where we were two years ago, I am extremely proud of that journey, that culminated in beating Hull City on Saturday. They are a fantastic football team, that have promotion aspirations, but we have proven that we can compete with anyone at this level”

If you don’t know the history between Cardiff City fan, Jones and Swansea City then you have probably haven’t been managing your ecological impact when Jones is in town. He has had some moments when bringing teams to the swansea.com. Overall he has managed Stoke, Luton and Charlton over nine games when playing the Swans. He has lost five times. The Addicks haven’t beaten the Swans since August 2008 (2-0) and over the last ten meetings that remains one win. Their last victory before 2008 was 1972.

Looking back to that 2008 game, 2,412 Swans fans were in attendance, and the team - some will recall fondly. It was the first second flight game in twenty four years. It wasn’t a good return to the Championship but the season would see Charlton relegated. The Swans finished eighth with the best goal difference outside of the top four.

Vitor Matos summed up his season earlier today and when we take a step back and look at his time over the last five months there is a very positive feeling about the club. "It has been a challenging season, but we have shown a lot of growth and development, and we have taken steps towards where we want to be and what we want to become. That's very important, we are building something that gives us very good foundations for the future. There's a lot of things we can improve on, the season is finishing and the first thing everyone needs to do is to rest and recover. Then we have to come back and be ready to have a proper push for next season. We know where we want to be. We will see how we build the squad, we know we need to be much more competitive in some specific games, and we need to be more dominant with the ball against some teams where we were not able to show that”

Joe Allen has left his position at the club as a temporary coach. He came in to assist Matos in early December with Leon Britton who will remain in the coaching set up for now. Joe will no doubt Ince again get a wonderful reception much the same as the final game of lat season. One more piece of news, Filip Lissah has made the team of the season in the Scottish Premiership. What a season he has had. Now a Czech u21 international. Their main squad has yet to be determined. The likelihood of Lissah making it is slim, but they are still to decide if they will take players for the experience.
