Wales v Ghana : Full match build up, extended international break news
Tuesday, 2nd Jun 2026 16:30 by Swansea Independent

Craig Bellamy was never going anywhere once he secured his post as head coach of his country. The fact he had an incredible start and earned Wales credibility via the Nations League, when that fell away after a last ditch World Cup Qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina was lost on penalties, the shine had gone.

In that qualification stage Bellemay will almost certainly look to the 4-3 defeat in Belgium playing a huge part in the catch up to qualify. Wales dominated possession that night a year ago in the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels - and the magnificent ending at home against Bosnia and Herzegovina felt as flat as any pancake as the crowds drifted away. It’s reported that ten thousand tickets have been sold for tonight’s encounter against World Cup qualifiers Ghana, proof of that will be on the eye for sure.

Even without some star performers Ghana will be a huge threat. New head coach, Carlos Queiroz is determined to put this very talented side on the world football map and their hosts tonight will most certainly not get their own way. It’s the first time Wales have hosted an African side at home but as Queiroz says, "We want to play great football, we want to play to win and bring joy to our fans, We will try and be the best team on the pitch." To do that there has to be an emphasis on attack. Mohammed Kudus has been ruled out of the tournament, while defender Alexander Djiku will also miss out after suffering an injury setback.

The hosts will be without Jordan James, Rubin Colwill, Mark Harris, Ben Cabango and Liam Cullen (below), although Connor Roberts, Chris Mepham and Ben Davies have returned to the squad. On tonight’s game and Saturday away in Romania Bellamy believes that it will test his squad due to the huge difference between this weeks opponents. "They're two very, very different challenges, but challenges that can really help us improve because I see big improvements in the team. We have to improve, I have to improve as a coach, and those two factors motivate me a lot.Neco Williams coming off the back of an exceptional season at Nottingham Forest is still looking back on that qualification failure. "I think the most disappointing thing about not getting to the tournament is I feel if we had got there, we would have given it a real go. We would have had a good chance of going far. But this is the reality – the fans have got to stick with us, believe in us as players and the manager, and the good times will come."

Bellamy is boosted by the return of Connor Roberts, Chris Mepham and Ben Davies and will be hoping to try out some of the youngsters in the squad as he prepares for the Nations League and the next Euros qualification cycle. He has lso called up Cameron Congreve from Swansea City and Ollie Bostock of West Bromwich Albion. Ben Davies has now signed a contract extension at his club Spurs so he won’t be moving anywhere this transfer window which starts in thirteen days time.
