Stephen Welsh an of contract Celtic defender with limited game experience for his age (26) has agreed to join the Swans on a multi year deal. Head Coach, Vitor Matos is believed to have persuaded Welsh to come to Swansea amidst other Championship clubs chasing him. (Daily Record)

Motherwell were interested but couldn’t stretch to the money he and Celtic required to return to the club after two seasons on loan. Despite agreeing to termínate his contract at Celtic early that comes with certain signing on obligations for the Swans which was another hurdle Motherwell couldn’t reach. Hearts were linked with the defender so it seems a bit of a coup for Matos who is far more involved in Swansea recruitment this summer. Welsh came through the youth ranks and was part of squads that won three Premierships, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups.(DR)

Welsh was noted as one of the top defenders last season in Scotland. He first came to light when the Swans watched him in a pre season competition in Como, Italy last summer at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia (below) ** (Exc) Welsh can play centre back and right back, two positions the Swans are looking to strengthen this summer.

Welsh joins ex Celtic team mate Adam Idah at Swansea City as the club build early for the new season. This seems like a great move for the player and the club and congratulations to the Swans leadership for getting the terms sorted early. Welsh can now join the club officially having terminated his contract at Celtic he will will be present for day one and the return to training in June. It is likely his registration will go through by or on July 1st.

He does have Europa League experience with Celtic and has made nearly 150 appearances in his career. Good work as well by head scout Jay Lefevre who specialises in Scottish transfers and was at Celtic leaving in November 2025. This looks like a quality move by the club.
