Swansea City : Meet the new boy with a big job to do

Ben Stevens will become the new Swansea ‘whatever’ his role will be called this week, it’s common knowledge but really it doesn’t matter what he is called as long as he does his job to the benefit of Swansea City.

With recruitment specialist, Adam Worth leaving as last season came to a close and Richard Montague nine months ago it is high time the Swans had someone with a professional history in the game so on that point they should be congratulated. Stevens relies upon strong analytical evidence when delving deep into players of interest and was certainly behind Marc Guehi signing from Chelsea to Crystal Palace. He based that on his two seasons at Swansea and his nigh on sixty games played. He will need to grasp quickly the huge gaps in the clubs football operations, develop a long-term strategy, and we hope is left to bring together a successful recruiting drive at Swansea.

We reported a few days back that the Swans were considering a new role involving these areas but he will also need to be well versed in the financial restrictions the club face with the new SCR (Squad Cost Ratio) rules and how specific they are to Swansea City. The Swans will expect him to be as successful as he was at Palace in his progress in bringing in players like Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise. That’s one hard job which falls under a strict player trading model at Swansea. Another area Stevens will be responsible for. This appointment was seemingly in place a few weeks back.

The forty year old learned his trade whilst always looking upwards at Crystal Palace as head of performance and recruitment analysis. He then made it to assistant sporting director at the Eagles. He does have a very well respected scouting network led by Jay Lefevre to work with which will also be a part of Stevens responsibility to head up. He has also worked at Southampton and Newcastle United. On expenditure Stevens will operate on a very strict budget as mentioned, but we are led to believe he has plenty in the tank for the Swans to work with. These are cited as players at a low cost or even free (Stephen Welsh coming in from Celtic is a good recent example) Of course there will be funds and we are yet to hear of any movements out which could bring in multi millions (over time up to five seasons potentially) to swell the clubs coffers. We also understand recruitment specialist, Adam Worth left an extensive profile up until the date he left the club. This will prove invaluable as it is club property, especially if any of Worth’s permanent signings last season are anything to go by.

We have to add though that Stephen Welsh was the overall responsibility of Jay Lefevre. So with the season still around eight weeks away, and the transfer window open it seems just one new addition in Stevens could well be the boost the club needs. It looks like CEO Tom Gorringe has put some decent work together here despite the prolonged wait. And yes of course everyone knew he was working hard to do so. It’s just that nine months without a DoF of sorts was beginning to look amateurish.

The very area that balances the books and makes a club money has been decided.
