Portugal v Wales : This competition is so important for Wales Thursday, 24th Sep 2026 10:11 by Swansea Independent It’s a tough start in Lisbon for Wales in their first Nations League game against Portugal this evening (7:45pm) This competition does get some ridicule but it has earned Wales a lot of opportunity in the past few campaigns. Winning the last Nations League group B4 gave Wales a World Cup play-off insurance policy, promotion to League A, and put them in the top tier for the Nations League campaign that can provide a route towards Euro 2028. For the 2026 World Cup, winning Nations League Group B4 gave Wales a potential safety-net route into the World Cup play-offs. UEFA reserved four play-off places for the best-ranked 2024/25 Nations League group winners who failed to finish first or second in normal World Cup qualifying. Wales were among the Nations League group winners in that ranking. The fantastic start that head coach, Craig Bellamy had was the catalyst for Wales. In the event, Wales didn’t need that Nations League safety net: they finished second behind Belgium in World Cup qualifying, so qualified for the March 2026 play-offs through the normal qualifying route. As we know that play off final was lost on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina. So, the Nations League was introduced to avoid insignificant friendlies, at least at its inception. Wales also have an additional Euro 2028 advantage because they’re one of the four hosts. All four hosts still enter qualifying, but two finals places are reserved for the two best-ranked hosts who haven’t already qualified through the qualifying groups. In simple terms: winning the last Nations League gave Wales a World Cup play-off insurance policy, promotion to League A, and put them in the top tier for the Nations League campaign that can provide a route towards Euro 2028.Thats the basic information that proves the point that for Wales these games are so important. Wales are in League A, Group 4 with Portugal, Denmark and Norway. They play each side home and away — six matches. * Finish 1st or 2nd: Wales qualify for the Nations League quarter-finals in March 2027. ![]() Around 2,500 Wales supporters (above) are expected in Lisbon for tonight’s Nations League opener against Portugal. The Red Wall received an allocation of approximately 2,500 tickets, with additional Welsh supporters travelling independently. Rough estimates are in and around 3,500. Last night in Lisbon was a red wall party with many teams represented. The majority with allegiances to Swansea City and Cardiff City. We have a number of Swansea Independent linked supporters there and will have a match report after the game. ![]() We are pleased to support the British Heart Foundation via Luke James hard hitting book which is now available online via many Amazon regions.
