Obafemi ‘Scores some goals for Swansea’ in another three goal home win
Saturday, 5th Mar 2022 17:30 by Keith Haynes

Swansea City again turned on the style to make it five goals in two games with Michael Obafemi shining in front of goal yet again. Okay, let’s make it sound better, that’s eight goals in three games for the swans. We have to put that Sheffield United game to the back of our minds. To see Swansea dominate a first half so calmly and to score two goals from well created chances will please supporters of the Jacks. Coventry haven’t won in Swansea since 1960, and that trend has continued.

A dominant first half was just what the swans fan base ordered this afternoon at the swansea.com stadium in west Wales. Despite the usual and expected misplaced passes at the back, that fortunately didn’t bother Swansea too much as a very confident home side dictated matters throughout the first half. That said Andy Fisher kept the sky blues at bay with a lovely save after being sold a real dummy when playing out from the back. The two first half goals from the swans were testament to a thoroughly enjoyable first forty five. Referee Geoff Eltringham who to say the least loves a card made two entries in to his book and missed a nailed on handball from Coventry keeper Simon Moore.

Swansea City’s first goal came from a quick and sharp passing move that saw Korey Smith supply a lovely cross for Michael Obafemi who knocked the ball In to the path of Jamie Paterson. He rifled home a lovely shot across the sky blues keeper to make it 1-0. It was no more than the swans deserved and despite the odd raid down the swans right Coventry couldn’t find an answer to their opponents slick passing and dominance on the ball.

Andy Fisher in the swans goal looked assured and two fantastic passes up to Jamie Paterson and then Michael Obafemi were wasted through poor control. Had they been able to keep ahold of the ball all manner of options would have been available. Coventry’s response was poor, badly thought out long balls were often seen to run out of play, and their frustration against the swans dominance resulted in a few rash challenges.

The second goal was again testament to Russell Martin’s desire to not only retain possession but to turn it in to chances. Andy Fisher delivered a superb ball to Flynn Downes who cleverly allowed the ball to run across his chest then supplying Obafemi with a lovely pass. Michael’s first touch wasn’t brilliant but his pace kicked in and he slid the ball underneath the advancing Moore.

At 2-0 and let’s be honest it could have been more the swans played out the half confidently, despite that late opportunity for the sky blues.

Coventry City were out early to start the second half which is always an indication of what has occurred in the half time dressing room. Having been stung by Swansea City and 2-0 down it was clear Mark Robins wasn’t happy.

Coventry came out with purpose in the second half and despite Swansea City’s determination to help them out their delivery in to the box was again poor. However, a superb interception by Matt Grimes coupled with two touches sent Obafemi away and again his pace beat his marker. With only the goalkeeper to beat he competently slid his shot in to the sky blues net for the third goal of the game for the swans.

Number three for the swans today against Coventry City

From there the pace of Swansea’s play slowed and niggling injuries to Cyrus Christie, Korey Smith and Andy Fisher were evident. Smith’s resulted in him leaving the field of play. Martyn Waghorn had a decent chance to score after that but placed his header wide and Andy Fisher again saved well with his feet to deny another opportunity. On eighty three minutes more lack of concentration from the swans presented Coventry with another chance. The goal slid home by Gustavo Hamer after a desperate save from Fisher. It’s in games like this you expect things to happen negatively for the swans. Joel Piroe having had a a goal rightly ruled offside a yard offside again found the net, this time a debatable flag prevented him adding to Swansea’s tally.

It has to be said Swansea City didn’t remain at the level they were at after fifty minutes until the end of the game. The intensive passing routines and running did take its toll on the home side. The injuries in the second half were a sign of the dominance Russell Martin demands. Coventry did have chances to get more out of the game, most of them came from a lack of concentration from the swans defence. The midfield once Olivier Ntcham came on for the tired Paterson looked dysfunctional, Smith obviously injured leaving Downes and Grimes almost unnoticeable In the middle of the park. Their presence and bearing of the first half was missing leaving gaps and a tired Ryan Manning to clear up any threat. That being said the calmness of Kyle Naughton was a steadying influence as the swans saw the game out.

It could have been even better today, but then again it’s two games won on the trot. Three games at home won as well leaves the swans with an impressive recent run of results. It’s easy to look at a three goal return at home and pick holes in the performance. To steer the swans away from those embarrassing results against Sheffield United and Stoke City is commendable and Russell Martin will review today’s game as a real learning curve.

To see returning players in Viktor Gyökeres and Jake Bidwell not impact on the game was also a huge relief. It often happens to the swans.

It really does endorse Martin’s vision and the way he wants his teams to play. It has holes in it, and teams will have chances as a result. The next game comes this Tuesday at home, the visitors are Fulham, they will no doubt make far more of any chances the swans give them. Cyrus Christie can’t play as a loan player. Korey Smith will almost certainly have to have a series of tests if he is to be included, and Andy Fisher who hobbled around during the second half is another concern.

But when all is said and done that was another win against a decent championship side, and one that is looking at the play offs. Nobody can argue with that.
