I'd also argue that many of those workers are not happy with the risks but they have little choice.
Whereas some people like working the so called low value jobs. I know someone who used to have a well paid job with a bank but wasn't happy, too much stress. She hung on in until her mortgage was paid off and now she works as a school cleaner and is very happy. She gets to spend a lot of time with her daughter, she always has a big smile on her face.

Jasper, I don't doubt what you say about the USA but why does the EU hold massive food stockpiles,

https://www.euractiv.com/section/agriculture-food/news/eu-stockpiling-does-littl

it seems for the same reasons as the USA, to keep prices up. It's always coming back to money. Money is the root of our troubles.

Sorry cat meant to upvote your post and did the opposite in error, so went out of thread and back in again so I could upvote it back to 0.

The irony of the produce mountains also made me smile.

Guess what, the food on our shelves is produced all over the world, a lot of it without subsidy (see New Zealand).
...and of course there is a whole production chain bringing it to your door, everybody in the chain motivated by profit.

Why don’t the socialists explain to everyone how farming faired in the Soviet Union and China.

Not all of the protests have been, young Ace. I’ve been on dozens of protest marches over the years, all industry related aside from the Countryside Alliance London march back at the fag end of the ‘90s which was absolutely enormous and not once have I witnessed anybody break into a zoo enclosure and steal a monkey, have you?

Looking at the outright racist replies to that post, I'm going to guess that's another example of 'fake news' around the protests. Like people tweeting videos of warzone explosions and claiming it was happening in an American city or those claiming the police officer in question was a well-known racist Trump supporter.

People believing what they read on Twitter or from other unsubstantiated sources seems weird to me. Like Keourac knowing exactly who the protesters are, despite being a continent away.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

I'm somewhere in between Kerouac and Ace here.

We all know that any large scale protest will attravt fringe groups intent on causing trouble and when they do the innocent get caught up with (and usually suffer more than) the guilty.
The protests in London that went bad, the Gilet Jaunes where I saw a news report that a man in a wheelchair had been beaten by police.
That said Trump's reaction has been more of a warlord than a President, he's behaving like he's putting down an insurrection. He has all the people skills and common sense of a rabid fox.
We know most socialist governments fail yet we know capitalism doesn't work for the majority.
Maybe socialist governments fail because the powerful capitalist states don't want them to succeed so set about making sure they don't. Maybe socialism can only work if the whole world does it? Saying that, socilaist governments often seem to end up being run by left wing versions of Trump anyway.
Whichever way it goes the rich are always better off and the poor suffer the consequences, usually in poorer public services, pay dropping in real terms and higher unemployment.

Which begs the question, what do we do? IS there a better way and who has the ideas for a better way forward?

The way the world is going, are we heading for a kill or cure moment? This virus has woken a lot of people up to the possibility that things could and should be better but those in power will be determined to hang on to power and keep the system that serves them best.

This George Floyd killing might have started something rolling (in the USA at least) that's very hard to stop.

PS, for the record, ALL racism is bad and Black people have every right to feel aggrieved but when I hear someone say all white people are racist then I get angry. I try to treat people the way they treat me, often better than they treat me, live and let live.

New Zealand has a socialist govt as does Ireland, they seem to be doing ok.

This fake too?

There are peaceful protests, plenty of them, but there are also increasing incidents of outright criminality and worse.

I think you're smart enough to know the difference in credibility between a chief of police making a statement to the media about a horrific incident and a few seconds of smartphone footage posted by an obvious racist. Still, if that false equivalence makes you feel better then crack on.

I completely agree with your last statement. Unfortunately there are always groups who will latch on to peaceful protests and use them for their own gains. I've seen claims that the worst offences are being committed by white nationalists trying to undermine the point of the protest, but I take that with a huge pinch of salt without proof.

A point was well made earlier though that some peaceful protests are being met with violence from police/national guard, while nobody seemed worried when armed white people were entering government buildings protesting the lockdown. Kind of proves the point about different ethnicities being treated differently by the authorities, don't you think?

New Zealand has a socialist govt as does Ireland, they seem to be doing ok.

Well, that’s bullshit isn’t it;

Ireland...
Fine Gael - is a liberal-conservative political party in Ireland.

The general election for the 33rd Dáil took place on 8 February 2020. The members of the 33rd Dáil met for the first time on 20 February 2020. Leo Varadkar was proposed as Taoiseach, and was defeated, but no other candidate was successfully nominated. Varadkar tendered his resignation to the president, but the members of the 31st Government will continue to carry on their duties until their successors have been appointed.

...and as for New Zealand:
No party has been able to govern without support from other groups since 1996, making coalition government standard. Historically the two largest, and oldest, parties are the New Zealand Labour Party (centre-left, formed in 1916) and the New Zealand National Party (centre-right, formed in 1936).
Following the 2017 general election held on 23 September 2017, the New Zealand First party held the balance of power between the sitting centre-right National Party government, and the left bloc of the Labour and Green parties. Following negotiations with the two major parties, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters announced on 19 October 2017 that his party would form a coalition government with Labour.[1] That same day, Green Party leader James Shaw announced that his party would give confidence and supply to the 55 seat Labour—NZ First government.[2] The Greens' support, plus the coalition, resulted in 63 seats to National's 56–enough to ensure that Ardern maintained the confidence of the House.

says it all really. Anti fascists didn't kill George Floyd, the police did. 3 of the 4 officers responsible still haven't been arrested and Trump is happy to go to war domestically to protect those scum f**ks.

I bet white old racists like Tummer and Dav are lapping it up, the sight of leather boots on black necks really getting their old jeckels up. C**ts.

Omar has been widely suspected of doing just that, though. And not just by the GOP.

Her own hometown newspaper, which is left-leaning, ran an expose on it.

So how do you know it's a lie? And what does race have to do with it? Do you always look at everything in terms of race? That sounds pretty racist.

Any other examples?
