Here we go, apparently people shouldn't work from home because cheese and coffee are too distracting!

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/boris-johnson-says-cheese-and-coffee-can-d

Alcohol and cake in the political workplace re just fine though and stopping alcohol in Westminster is excessively puritanical according to Kwasi Karteng.

Maybe if ALL our politicians had less alcohol they'd do a better job? Maybe they wouldn't fall asleep in Westminster or say and do such blatantly stupid things.

I picked it up from the comments.

I was going to comment but Christening is a religious topic so I'm out except to concluded with the fact Johnson is as large a hypocrite as it's possible to be.

This is your capitalist economy.

Market insists on low cost and high quality.
If your company does not embrace it, then the competition will.

Better to go the high tech route rather than do low margin work and get undercut by India and China.

That needs investment rather than cuts.

Makes you wonder why Drakeford is so anti business and his policies are driving business and jobs away. Wales needs to invest in infrastructure now. 20 years in power 20 years of queues at the Brynglas Tunnels. All new road projects cancelled.

Whatever route is chosen the companies will always want the lowest costs so will take the jobs to the cheapest source.

That's because they want to maximise profits so they can have massive wages and bonuses and make sure their dividends are good too.

That wont change what ever the route, greed will always rule at board room level. Capitalism and socialism, neither works for everybody. In the end the people with the power always win and the majority of us have to slog our lives away so they can live in luxury. Some escape the daily toil and they often forget where they came from.

I know plenty of people who have worked very hard and never gotten that luck. We personally had some very bad luck, it nearly ruined us and it's taken us nigh on 15 years of hard work to get into a good situation. Just in time really because the world has gone bonkers again!

It's very simplistic to say that hard work is all you need to succeed in life. Hard work is essential of course, but good fortune is also a key factor. The problem I have with Socialism is that it seeks to treat those who work hard and those who won't (not can't) equally, which is an absolute nonsense.

A true socialist system should acknowledge that people want to better their lives, their income, their housing. It should be about helping those who want to work hard and improve their situation to achieve that. Instead too many of them concern themselves far more with tearing down the successful, to ensuring "equality" as if that was something remotely achieveable in a World with so many differing personalities.

Agree with all of that.

I would add though that education can be key in life improvement.

I think we’ll come to regret what’s happened with the ballooning of tuition fees. For some disadvantaged kids it will to them not attempting to go. For others the repayments will haunt them for the rest of their working life.

I’m not for one minute suggesting the system was perfect before, but now it seems to be a money making scheme for some.

Quality Education is vastly important to improving your status in life. I have issues with the system of Comprehensive education, again leading back to the idea that everyone is equal. They aren't. Somehow the brightest kids have to be taken out of that system and given every opportunity to shine instead of being left stuck in the sausage factory.

As far as Universities go, few policies have done and continue to do as much damage as New Labour's insane belief that 50% of school leavers should go to University. It's a key factor in the current skills shortage as degrees were actively marketed as better than apprenticeships. There must be hundreds of thousands of school leavers lumbered with student loan debt who'd have none of that if they'd just gone into employment.

I don't have a problem with University students contributing towards the cost of it given the expected higher incomes, but I do have a problem with the fraudulent idea sold to them that you must have a degree to do well in life.

Hard work does not always equal reward. There are so many other factors involved.
Socialism would be allowing everyone the opportunity to better themselves.

You’re preaching to the choir.

The rise of ‘less earning potential’ degrees came broadly in time with the initial 3k fees. Now fees have trebled it makes it even dafter.

As for skills shortages (where a degree is needed) there is a vehicle there to support this. At time of writing there is additional financial help for those training in Medicine, Dentistry, Teaching and Social Work. I’m sure this could be expanded to other sectors where recruitment is an issue.

There must be a better way to support both apprenticeships and the academically able. Whatever it is, for this to happen the whole accountability system needs looking at.

You don't need a degree to be a Nurse, or a Police Officer, yet these days it's seen as a pre-requisite. Vocational qualfications have been made basically worthless. That needs to change.

The Government need to be smart about this. In areas where there is an obvious skills shortage they should be pouring in resource. Subsidise those learning how to plumb, drive HGV's or wire a house. Cover the tuition costs of people doing degrees in STEM areas. Anyone else should be paying for it themselves.

For stuff like Dentistry, I'd be offering free tuition and a living cost payment in return for a 10-15 year commitment to NHS service.

The Teaching ones come with ‘Golden Handcuffs’ that keep you there for at least five years.

Doesn’t sound like that long but the attrition rate is around a third between 3 and 5 years in.

Teaching is one of the hardest. No idea how they manage it but the temptation to chuck some of the chopsy sods out of the nearest window must be huge.
