I was looking at this list of Saints' 10 most expensive signings:

The only real successes in there are Ings & maybe Adams. Some have been total disasters. Is it just poor recruitment on our part or are buys in that price range (15-20 million) inherently risky? To be worth that much they've obviously got something about them but maybe there's a reason, like attitude problems, why we've been able to get them.
Seeing we're likely to be shopping in that market again, I hope we make a better fist of it. We can't afford many more flops. |  |

Saints are never going to be a club that pays true big money for a player, when we do we seem to end up with overpriced players with attitude problems rather than truly genuine prospects.
We have to hone what we have done well and keep doing it, that way we can be competitive in the Premier League, some might not like to accept that, but it is really the only way forward for us.

It would be interesting to compare them with the 10 most expensive signings of all the other Premier League clubs and see how we've fared in the value for money stakes. There is an impression, perhaps a mistaken one, that most of the money we've received from selling our best players has been wasted, even 'poured down the drain' in recent years. For every good player we sell, we seem to buy 2 mediocre ones, leading to an overall watering down of the quality of the squad. But, maybe we are no worse than other clubs.

OK, not very scientific I know. Doesn't take into account when the players were bought, whereabouts in their careers they were, or the returns the clubs got while they played for them, but looking at market values in Transfermarkt confirms what we all knew - that our forays in the market weren't great.
In particular, unlike Saints, the other 3 have bought at least one player whose value has increased significantly.

We haven’t done that well for years. Bar Jwp and maybe KWP no big clubs want our players. We need to get away from this model as it’s failing |  |
