Joiners Arms Open Pre Match On Sunday
Joiners Arms Open Pre Match On Sunday

Save the traditional British pub by popping into the Joiners Arms before the game against Newcastle on Sunday.

Go to any city, town or even village in the country and the traditional pub is under threat, they are closing down at a rate of knots as the chain pub takes over and greedy corporate companies that own large pub chains push up the price of a pint making it more of a rare treat than an affordable pleasure.

The Joiners Arms in St Mary's Street is under threat as much as anybody and stands as a shining beacon, but that might not be the case for too much longer, like anyone it needs more trade and with that in mind is going to now open before and after Saints home games.

The pub is a dying breed in Southampton, an old Victorian boozer that has neither succumbed to the 21 century pub interior designers nor lost any of its charm, in short a place for drinkers rather than families having a meal, but hey there are plenty of places you can go for that, all too few where the pub atmosphere still exists.

So keep the British pub alive by popping down to the Joiners on Sunday and indeed at all Saints home games from now on, you may think your contribution may be small, but in these days of spiralling rents, a good crowd in the Joiners having a few pints is probably the difference between keeping a Southampton instituition open and it being another statistic in the list of closing traditional British pubs.

Paul Heaton ex of the Housemartins & The Beautiful South did his bit for the cause on Thursday and Frank Turner is playing over Xmas to help bring in the cash to keep the place open, OK drinking habits are changing in the 21st century, but lets keep our pub tradition alive.

Or for a real traditional pub rather than a music venue thats on its uppers and is by no means known for the quality of its traditional ale... you could go to some of the other fine traditional pubs that have always been open before Saints games like, the Richmond in Portswood or the Junction or South Western in St Denys or the Waterloo Arms or the Guid Dod or the Shooting Star or .............

It would be a tragedy if this place shut with it's musical heritage.

The Joiners isnt on its uppers as some of you may have seen in the press, it may put on bands but its still a pub and traditional pubs dont neccessarily have to put on a selection of real ales to be traditional

Perhaps we will have to disagree Nick, but the Joiners is a music venue and very much not what I would consider a traditional pub, (real beer or not), and apologies if I'm wrong but your article seems to suggest that the place is opening up unusually on a Sunday lunch time in an attempt to proffer from the match at St Mary's which would suggest there is a perception that after many years of not opening during the day in now needs the extra income.... I would like to add that it makes no difference to me either way if they open or not on Sunday I will be driving on that day. I would also add that I have on many occasions over at least the last three decades supported the music events promoted by the Joiners and enjoyed every second of each event ....

It hasnt opened during the day for a while, but with support for live music dwindling as kids prefer staying in with computer games to going out and watching live music, the owner has to divrsify or face being unable to sustain the venue and to lose such a great venue and see the pub converted into flats or the like would be a great shame.

When I said traditional I was more referring to its general appearance and decor rather than its functions, stand in the bar at thejoiners and it looks like it did 50 years ago, stand in most pubs and they are converted buildings rather than the purpose built pubs that seem to be being demolished or converted at a great ratein this country.

So for those that do pop down on Sunday you are helping save not only one of the few remaining purpose built victorian pubs still operating in the city, but live music for future generations

I concede at least it was built as a pub Nick, and great news I'm not driving after all so will try and pop in and let you buy me a pint...... Cheers Nick
