QPR in Reykjavik in 1984- UEFA Cup 11:28 - Dec 13 with 968 viewsBWAS

Having just spent a few days in Reykjavik it brought back some memories of when I was last there. In September 1984 when we played KR Reykjavik in the UEFA Cup First Round. Apparently I was one of only 68 supporters who went to that game. We had a great time and some funny stories. Beer was still illegal in Iceland then although we were able to find a couple of speakeasy’s that sold it. Club Hollywood being one of them- I think they were able to sell it as it was under the auspices of the American Airfiorce- I think Keflavik Airport was still officially an American Airport Base then. We stayed in a hotel called Hotel Esja which was very close to the ground. The Hotel is still there but is now part of the Hilton Group. I actually went in there and got speaking to the bloke on the desk and when I mentioned Club Hollywood he smiled and said that his mum had often attended there in the 80’s and had many good nights there. The game itself was remembered for a couple of things. We won 3-0 but also that at the time I think it was the lowest ever European Cup attendance- 1,600 - people stayed away due to the impending Hurricane Diana which they thought was due to hit the island but never actually did. However I digress, I think there is something else this game should be remembered for but I may be wrong . I’m hoping that someone on this site could put me right- it’s been nagging me for over 40 years! The fact that Ray Eaton in his excellent book of 50 memorable matches didn’t mention it suggests I may be wrong……… but here goes. I think that with the starting line up of: Hucker, Dawes, Fereday, Wicks, Fenwick, Micklewhite, Fillery, Bannister, Stainrod and Gregory- QPR are the only English team to have ever fielded 11 English Players in a European Cup game. Bearing in mind that in those days and the 70’s, 60’s and 50’s there was always an obligatory Welshman, Scotsman or Irishman. In the grand scheme of things it’s not that important but I wondered if anyone can help me scratch this itch!

I was also one of the few who went , Chris guy would prob know for sure about the full Englishman record .

Also remember it making Oldham away in august feel positively like a heatwave , never been so sold in my life for the game ,

I remember seeing comments from some who went about how friendly and attractive the local women were. Possibly more memorable than the game.

I was at the home game at Highbury, as well as the 6-2 v Partizan Belgrade. Anyone go to the disastrous second leg of that one?

The lads I sat with at the time and I, wanted to go, but as we were either 6th form/just started working and never went with the official QPR, the cost was a problem.

It was either the late George Gristwood or his son Danny, who informed me that there was a travel agent in West Ealing who people were talking to and as I had a pre-uni summer job in Ealing, I was tasked with getting the details.

I walked in on my lunchour and after saying I wanted to be in Reykjavik for whatever Wednesday it was, the agent said, Are you a QPR supporter?' Turned out I was the third one to inquire just on that day!

The cheapest option: train to Aberdeen and take a boat that took, IIRC, two and a half days to get there with an ETA of around an hour before k.o.. Upon doing so, the boat would do a turnaround and after completing formalities, it headed back to Aberdeen. At the very best, the turnaround might take three hours! If we didn't make it back, then we'd have to wait several days for her return to see if we could get on!

Amazingly, we debated for a few days the merits of seeing, at best, 45 mins of QPR, always assuming good sailing there, before sense finally prevailed.

Top-top OP by the way.

Looks to be lacking a right back, Warren Neill possibly?

Fascinating thread, having only been there once I thought it simply involved a three hour flight from Gatwick and a decent pint on arrival. How times have changed.

It was indeed Warren Neil. If you are including the subs then its not a full English. Ian Stewart (N.Ire) and Jeremy Charles (Wales). Both subs used.

Technology advances, unfortunately humans do not.

Having written that post on the train to Middlesbrough yesterday-don’t mention the war!- I did indeed miss out one player- Doh! I thought I would just double check this morning in Gordon Macy’s Complete Record of QPR and it was of course Warren Neill who was the missing player. The two substitutes were Charles and Stewart. They both came on - Charles for Bannister and Stewart for Fereday. One of the bizarre memories I have of the trip is that we were in the same flight as the players coming home- I don’t think we flew out with them- I remember Jeremy Charles gobbing on the baggage carousel at the airport - Heathrow I recall- and he thought it was the funniest thing in the world when it came around again with his phlegm still on the carousel!

It was indeed me John- and I did go into that shop in West Ealing. Luckily Rangers did a package- I think Daphne organised it. She also organised a trip to the Blue Lagoon when we were there. Sadly I got really drunk in one of the speakeasy’s the night before - probably Club Hollywood again- and I missed the trip. It was top of my bucket list when I went back there last week- worth waiting over 40 years for!

I didn’t go to Belgrade - but had a couple of mates who did. I, like many others I know, decided that as we had won 6-2 in the home game thought we’d save our money for the next trip! Over 40 years later still waiting- needless to say the piggy bank with the savings in was broken into many years ago as I reckoned I would never need that money!

Agree with PH, excellent post/thread. Well done.

Yes that was a not to be forgotten couple of days that came on the back of a 5-0 drubbing to Spurs with Clive Allen netting a couple of goals.
I have still got the booklet "We Love You Rangers We Do" which was a review of the 1984-85 season with emphasis on the KR Reykjavik and Partisan Belgrade away games.
Our old friend Tony Incenzo was the author and it cost £2.
An advert for the Crown and Sceptre was on page 1 with June and Jim Arnott extending a friendly welcome to all Rangers supporters.
Also on page 1 was a name check for those who had given "assistance with this review."
Quite a few photos in this booklet so fair play to Tony.
Luckily I swerved the Partisan return leg which was like (according to Bob Stockwell) .."going to Millwall with a Chelsea scarf on!"
I often wondered what happened to these Rangers fanatics.
Most of us were in our early to mid 20's then and now we're all in our 60's.
To quote the title of Oasis's 2010 compilation album "Time Flies" and I doubt very much if I will see Rangers in Europe again in my lifetime.
Just as a follow up the Saturday following the Reykjavik trip we were at home to Newcastle.
Those of a certain age will never forget that game!

The 5-5 after being 0-4 at HT.

And regards us getting to Europe again, you only have to win 6 games to lift the FA Cup and qualify for…… Oh wait !

Wow what memories... I never did the 84 Europe trips... I was in strike with the miners then, and married with a 3 year old and a 2 yr old... so money was .... well tight

But back in December 76 we went over to Cologne for the EUFA Cup tie. We had dispatched the Germans 3-0 at our place... and decided to go to the away leg....

We drove in my mate's Mark 2 cortina estate... we took the estate so the 4 of us could sleep in it... we arrived in the then West Germany the day before....

And hit the drink straight away... I remember going to Cologne Cathedral p!ssed up and one of the lads having a slash in the back of it... and being chased out by some very irate Germans .... no sense of humour

The game well what I remember was Don Masson scored very early on... and we were 4-0 up on aggregate... and then the wheels fell off... Dave Clement thumped a player and got sent off and we shipped 4 goals... and scraping through on the away goals

I also vaguely remember real fighter in the squares... and my mates cortina in danger of being set alight, due to the English number plate... I thi k it was only saved by Vic and some of his mates

We managed to get out alive... and drove back... I think in Belguim we shot a piston and got home to Dover on 3 ...

Fantastic few days... sadly 2 of the lads are no longer with us.. Jackie and Jonny both past away...
