Far too soon to pass judgement. He's 19. A few sub appearances are what you'd expect in the Premier League, at his age. Who knows what he'll be worth in the future?

You should have gone to football in the 70s. You'd have heard far worse. In fact, the Dell was one of the worst places for it. The abuse the Pompey players and fans got in the last derby game at the Dell, in 1996, was just as bad. Modern stadiums keep the crowds well away from the players but in old grounds, they can get close to them.

Yes, we extend our unbeaten run to 5 matches and 16 years. Pompey fans were really expecting a win today.

Could you see Adams pushed the ball into the net with the crook of his arm from where you were? VAR would have ruled it out.

Schmid was impressive in goal for Pompey. He's one of the top rated goalkeepers in the Championship and he really saved them from defeat.

But, anyway, that's 5 games and 16 years we've gone undefeated against them.

It looked like Pompey's goal should have been disallowed for handball. Unfortunately, there was no VAR

I guess it will be remembered as The Hand of Cod.

Like most fans, I thought we should have started with Fellows and Stewart instead of Matsuki and Armstrong, but, when they came on, they were both awful - just not cut out for the heat of battle. So, it's just as well Eckert chose the starting lineup and not us. I guess he knows the character of his players better than we do. Pity he brought them on at all. He must have thought the heat had been taken out of the game so it was OK to send them out there.

Scienza's injury made a huge difference.

Edit: I've just seen a replay. It was a clear handball. Adams scored with the crook of his arm.

Especially considering their goal was a handball and they injured our best player, a 1-1 draw was better than most on here expected. Until those 2 things happened, we were looking good for a win.

Overall, not many on here would have predicted we'd get as many as 4 points from the 2 games this week.

West Ham aren't coming down, which is good for us next season, but not so good for Fernandes, as it's been reported that Real Madrid were going to snap him up at the end of the season. West Ham won't let him go now.

Nuno moving from Forest to West Ham may have sealed Forest's fate. They could very well end up replacing West Ham in the bottom 3.

Yes, it was a perfectly good goal only disallowed because it was Southampton scoring first at Old Trafford. Shipperley headed in a Le Tissier cross. He was onside but it was disallowed because he won the ball instead of the United defender who was between him and the goal. We were on top for most of the first half and you could only hear the Saints fans. But after that, Cantona took control. The referee was very much United's 12th man in the 90s.

Our games at Old Trafford mostly seemed to go like that.

Yes, I remember that Man United game in '96. We lost 2-0. Cantona was magnificent. Terry Christian was stood next to me in the pub before the game. He sounded exactly like he did when he was hosting The Word, with that loud, Manc accent.

I went to a few games there in the 70s, supporting the away team, of course. It was usually half-empty and the atmosphere was dire. I've also been to Pompey away games when I've been working nearby. I remember seeing them at Notts County, when they only had about 50 fans there.

I was at those games. Usually, our away support was excellent, as it was for that Luton game, but for that midweek 6-2 win at Molineux, the difficulty of train travel there and back meant it was our smallest away following of the season so I was one of the few to enjoy it. I wonder if there is anybody else on here who was there? We had a decent following for that 4-0 defeat at Hull. The away section was along the side, but at half-time, a couple of our mob decided they were going to walk round and 'take' the home end. We saw a huge kefuffle behind the goal and then a while later they returned looking bloodied but pleased with themselves.

We were very much a cup team that season. We were concentrating on retaining the FA Cup as well as competing in Europe. I went to nearly every game. I saw us beat Chelsea 3-0 in extra time in a 3rd round replay at Stamford Bridge that same month, then beat Nottingham Forest in a replay in the next round before losing unluckily in another replay to the eventual winners, Man United. We beat Marseille 4-0 and reached the quarter-finals of the ECWC. On our day, we were one of the best teams in the country. We had top class players, like Mick Channon, Peter Osgood, Ted MacDougall and Alan Ball.

After we were knocked out of the cups, we went on a good run in the league and after the final game of the season, a 1-0 win at Blackpool, the captain, Alan Ball, walked along the train and told us, "Don't worry lads, we'll be promoted next season. " And, of course, we were, as we all knew we would be with players as good as that..

In those days there was a real bond between players and fans. We used to stand on the platforms at stations together, waiting for the same trains back. Although Lawrie and the players would stay together, you could chat to them. Lawrie was a very impressive character with a sharp, dry wit. Alan Ball was always very friendly and chatty.

Some of you may remember how we hardcore away fans, including the London Saints, always met up in the Fitzhugh (later the Corner Post) before home games at the Dell, and it was always buzzing with optimism and anticipation. We had some of the best support in the country and there was no ground more intimidating for away teams to play at.

It was not at all like this season.

It's incredible that he's stayed here as long as he has without kicking up a fuss. Along with Jay Robinson, he's on the lowest wages in the entire squad - £7,500 per week, compared to £40,000 per week for McCarthy and £70,000 per week for Aribo. Imagine how he must feel when he sees players like that being paid so much more than he is. It must be terrible for team morale.

Burnley will pay him 4 times more and give him the opportunity to play in the Premier League again and get his England career back on track. I'm sure his father-in-law will advise him to jump at the chance. Good luck to him. He deserves better than he's getting here.

Of course, our team will suffer as he'll be replaced by Wood or Quarshie.

After watching that I think they'd be a bit underwhelmed by Fratton Park at 12 o'clock on Sunday. These midday kick-offs never have very good atmospheres.

You could say it's a reflection of the falling standards of our squad, but he is our best central defender. In fact, he was our best player v Pompey at St Mary's so we're really going to need him on Sunday. Harwood-Bellis probably has more long-term potential, but we really need Stephens to partner him right now.

It's not a great squad. We certainly don't have the likes of Fonte and van Dijk any more. So, we have to make the best of what's available, and that's a central defensive pairing of Stephens and Harwood-Bellis, who have shown they're good enough to get us clean sheets at this level.

Is Tonda Eckert THE ONE?
at 09:36 22 Jan 2026

Well a win certainly puts a different perspective on things. Eckert has a better record than any of the 13 other Saints' managers since Nigel Adkins:

Not the Messiah, but not a very naughty boy either.

Predictions for tonight
at 15:25 21 Jan 2026

You mean they don't have a better goalkeeper, better centre forward, better full-backs, better defensive midfield than Saints? Seriously?

Just because we have a bunch of little attacking midfield players, doesn't mean we don't have one of the worst squads in the league in just about every position.
