Southampton At Portsmouth 1984

I didn’t go to that game but imagine I must now be one of the few contributors to the ugly who witnessed the last time we won there in the league, fifty years ago in 1976.

If memory serves, it was a mid week game shortly before either the F A Cup Semi or Final and Lawrie sidelined some of our better players who had been naughty. What they had done wrong I can’t remember.

Anyhow, we played a weakened team and it was a dreadful game. Micky Channon scored a very late winner and I didn’t even see it,having decided to walk back to the station early to avoid any problem.

The skates weren’t happy and decided to throw whatever they could find at the train as it left.

Half a century later and now it’s bubble time.

I don’t suspect that Sports Republic will worry too much about dwindling away support, doesn’t all the money go to the home club in any event ?

If you think our current squad is now capable of promotion even with a few additions, I respectfully suggest that you get down to Bet Fred.

We are now 12/1 against being promoted having been 5/2 to win the league outright at the start of the season.

As for Aribo and Edozie. What would you do if your not selected to play but allegedly in the case of Aribo are paid £70,000 a week. Demand a transfer ? I think not.

Possibly, but neither were winning goals against a team that a couple of seasons previously had won the F A Cup when winning it really mattered.

According to The Guardian.

Talk about a career in rapid free fall since he parted company with us.

I was one of the twelve thousand.

If anybody thinks we have had some bad away days lately they should have been with us.

As I recall:-

The weather was atrocious, cold and rainy with an away end with no roof.

We put out a full strength team on a pitch which was like a ploughed field which negated any skill advantage.

The two goals scored by Randall were the highlight of his career and he quickly faded into obscurity.

To say the least the police weren’t pleased to see us.

A throughly depressing F A Cup exit only surpassed by Adrian Heath’s last gasp goal when we played Everton at Highbury.

We have more chance of going up now than next seas

Exactly my point.

Sports Republic spent money and through sheer incompetence lost their investment by failing to keep us in the gravy train top flight, not once but twice in three years.

It’s not surprising then is it that from their point of view any desire to repeat the experience has completely vanished ?

That’s why in my opinion they have become what I eluded to previously, a risk adverse Player Trading Business and Entertainment Business based at St Mary’s.

If all goes well for them they will recover some of their previous outlay. Should it not, then I venture to suggest they won’t lose anymore.

Until they depart we will stay where we are, a mediocre team in the back waters of English football, a la Preston North End to name but one.

Purely from a footballing perspective you are undoubtedly correct Pat.

However, as GRIM points out, football success is not what matters to our current owners and their employees at Sports Republic.

Us fans want a competitive team who whatever league they play in will at least “ give it a go “.

They want ( and reluctantly to their credit have achieved ) a Player Trading Business and Entertainment Business based at St Mary’s, that at best makes them money and at worst doesn’t lose any.

In my opinion our and their objectives are currently incompatible.

Thus until Sports Republic depart, we have many years of mid table mediocrity to look forward to with us becoming very similar to Preston North End, a team with a considerable amount of history that nobody outside of Preston ever considers or thinks about.

2 Poor teams at Fratton Park
at 11:59 26 Jan 2026

My after match thoughts exactly.

The only difference of course being that Sports Republic’s laughingly called recruitment team spent £50 odd million in the summer and as far as I’m aware Portsmouth next to nothing.

Don’t be concerned about being pessimistic, I for one feel the same and just like last season can’t wait for it to finish.Unfortunately, it’s what our club being in the control of Sports Republic does to you.

Players to keep assuming relegation is avoided ? If Sports Republic went I would keep all of them other than those whose contracts had naturally expired. There’s a decent team in there somewhere that with a few sensible additions are capable of promotion, just not with the current owners.

Very unlikely given that we are now four points better off than we were this time last week.

Sports Republic ( Mr Parsons ) told us that we can’t compete in The Premier League and Mr Eckert and the players are simply following instructions to make certain that we don’t need to try.

Was that the game at old Trafford when Shipperly scored a perfectly decent “goal” in front of us Saints fans to make it 1-0, none of the United players objected nor did their crowd, only for the referee to chalk it off for reasons best known only to himself ?

If so, then good.

If not, then bad because it confirms that with advancing years my memory is fading faster than I believed.

It appears that if you are a season ticket holder then Adult tickets for the Leicester City F A Cup game can be purchased for just £10 with under 18s charged only £2.50.

In addition there will be no booking fee if purchased before close of play on the 26th of January.

Credit where credit due, they have finally managed to price an early round cup game correctly.

Have Sports Republic a plan if we lose tonight and Sunday ?
at 07:29 21 Jan 2026

Last season Luton were relegated having obtained 49 points.

Two defeats in the next two matches would requiring us needing 17 points from the last 17 fixtures to reach 50 points.

Those of us who love Southampton Football Club had better hope that the players have somehow managed to get their act together by close of play on Sunday, because I’ve no confidence that the Loons at Sports Republic will have any idea where 17 points will come from if they haven’t.

They don’t interest Sports Republic because they don’t want to get promoted.

Before a ball was kicked this season didn’t Mr Parsons say as much when he told us all that we don’t have the resources to play in The Premiership ?

Why bother to go when you’re comfortably mid table, knocked out of both cup competitions and effectively with nothing to play for the remainder of the season ?

Plus the fact that it’s just after Christmas and the next pay cheque is nearly a fortnight away and you can’t park a car anywhere near Brighton’s ground.

Far easier to save some money and stay at home and watch it on TV.

Sports Republic, tone deaf or just don’t give a f.ck ?
at 17:22 19 Jan 2026

Booed off the pitch on Saturday, 3 points from the last possible 21 and haven’t won a League game for I believe 39 days.

Sports Republic’s response ? Send me an email asking if I want to go to a Christmas Party at the stadium in Eleven months time !

My opinion? They are now just a Player Trading Business first, Hospitality and Entertainment Business second with Southampton Football Club a very distant third.
