As you can see I'm new to this board but the Frankie Knuckles thread has great interest to me for many reasons being ongoing and past memories and actions.
Now what I would like to know is why you like, love or have an interest in your genre. This could include many reasons, radio, clubs, bars, gigs, venues, people, friends, family etc.
The main one for me would be growing up in Northfields with Magnum Records shop backing onto my bedroom so had an education in Soul, Lovers Rock & Reggae from an early age.
Anyway over to you ladies & gents for your input.

I was thinking about this myself as i touched on it a bit on the Hendrix thread. I was brought up with rock and blues and anything else guitar related. The Beatles,Stones,Kinks,Hendrix,Clapton etc. My old man did pub gigs and his mates were always round jammin. I was always just into my football and listened to most things, although hip hop caught my attention. Hip hop djs scratching and mixing records , graffiti, Adidas trainers etc was probably my first music scene i was into but when i heard Joey Beltrams Energy Flash i was blown away. Never had music excited and fascinated me as much,and i was hooked. Probably about 89-90. Acid house had been around for a few years already and i didn't start going out clubbing/raving till 93 but vinyl,Technics1200 house and techno was a big part of my life. I think because it was a fresh sound,a new genre and a new attitude to music and life. Dance,and have a good time. I like most musical styles now but when a beat drops it still sends tingles down my spine. The Frankie thread is great and a good excuse to delve into the record box of youtube and find those belters. Good to have you on board W13R. Sorry for the ramble.

6th form Common Room was dominated by early 70s rock bands - Free, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash, Taste etc. A group of us used to go to a Rock club in Southall, where we saw many bands on a Sunday night. I've never lost my love of that type of music but I've always embraced new music and my interests are almost totally at odds with my 60+ year old peers who sometimes find R2 a bit too wild. I'm a regular reader of Q magazine and a 6Music listener and, in the last 2 years have seen Everything Everything, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, British Sea Power and Elbow. This year's purchases include Kasabian and Alt-J.

I am lucky enough to DJ out every single week playing the music I love (Funk, Soul, Hip Hop, Reggae, Disco) and have DJ'ed in loads of places playing Old Skool Hardcore in the revival (Early 2000's)
I have produced a few tracks in the Old Skool Hardcore vibe that have been pressed up to Vinyl.

Grew up in slough during the 90s and we had slough record centre and the orchard centre....so it was a decade of raving for me. Spent many a weekend in Windsor at mirage, happy days but way to many chemicals.
Also places like bagleys and the leisure lounge, miss the old days
I Followed my brothers music taste to start with so that meant I was into T Rex and then Punk Rock. I loved Punk as it was the antithesis of all that progressive rock stuff that was around t the time. I mean those blokes had stopped making singles FFS!! Used to love all the Dub Reggae that was being played between sets at the punk gigs so followed the Clash with their change of musical direction. Was then into all the Ska stuff like The Specials, Madness and the Beat and then a lot of electronic stuff. I saw Blancmange, The Passage and groups like Sad Lovers and Giants many times. Pop music was good in those days. My favourites were New Order though. I remember getting into House music very early though. There was a guy called Jazzy M who used to have two one hour shows (a Tuesday and Thursday I seem to remember) He used to play all this american House and used to own a record shop in West Croydon called 'Mi Price Records' where you could pick a lot of them up. I think I have always loved the evolution part of music and I have always found a lot of Electronic music very progressive and innovative (despite a lot of peoples perception gleaned form the formulaic rubbish we get in the charts now) I still listen to a bit of Rock but it is mainly dance music for me despite hitting 50 this year!!

I go Casiter Soul Weekend each September (although couldnt make a few weeks back) and there is always a Classic House set in one of the rooms over the weekend. Normally Andy Unique who does it (great DJ).

Born In Hammersmith but raised mainly in and around that hotbed of music Richmond in the early Sixties when all of a sudden a whole host of new and worth listening to bands suddenly burst onto the scene. I was an avid History geek as a nipper and it was the only lesson that i was interested in, for that reason when I learnt about the slavery trade it basically hit home with me and stayed to this day, along with that came my passion for the Delta Blues and the reasoning behind it and why those poor bastards years ago used to write-sing and play the Blues. I've road tripped a couple of times through Mississippi-Tennessee-Louisiana and Texas and sold my soul to the devil somewhere on Highway 61, stood by the banks of the Mississippi river in silence and a few cotton fields and I've stood right there in the street in Clarksdale Mississippi where the superb John Lee-hooker used to live, just stood there and took it all in. I was up to 12 Guitars and 4 Amplifiers at one time but I've sold most of them now due to my fretting hand being a whole heap of pain,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Delta Blues and any of the early Soul/gospel singers for me and of course all of those bands from the early Sixties. Have Mercy.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

PunteR, great tune. I remember the place where I heard that first, It was a great little club called the Brain in Wardour St which was real small but had a great atmosphere. Like a few on here I reckon I have grown up and gone through some of the most ground breaking and trend setting scenes and music in recent years, some good some bad but that's only my view. So to name a few in my 48 years in no particular order. Glam Rock Disco Soul Rare Groove Reggae Heavy Metal Grunge House Acid/Rave Punk New Romantic R&B Drum n Bass New Wave Garage Techno Indie
No doubt I have missed loads but what I do notice is that most are dance music related. Some of my best memories are music related and most usually contain friends or people with like minded music taste as mine. As I said above even up to current times I can usually put a tune to an event or a person/people.

StevenageRanger, you my man are everything I wish I could have been. Unfortunately I was the person who ferried around my then DJ mates. Never mind I still went to some quality do's without getting hassled about on what tracks I should have had inside my record box.

How odd..... As I said on my post on Brian's first record thread - my vinyl journey began at Magnums on Northfields Avenue!! From that first day I'd use as much of pocket money as possible on buying records or playing Asteriods, Lunar Lander, Space Invaders etc on the machines in there
My obsession with music is down to my Dad. He was a nightclub bouncer and did a bit of "roadying" for small locals bands in West London... You may've heard of a couple of these, one ended up being called The Who and another The Rolling Stones!! My Dad was, and still is, massively into rock n roll and genres spinning off of it. I loved playing with his reel to reel deck as a nipper and he always had tunes on no matter what the time or his mood. One of my favourite early memories is Friday nights at home, the old fella would be having a bath and getting ready with his cassette deck right next to the bathroom door at the end of dubious extension lines. He'd have Buddy Holly, Del Shannon etc blasting out and singing along As I got a bit older the routine stayed the same and whilst he was out I'd then tune into the radio and tape shows like Greg Edwards Best Disco in Town, Mike Allens late night dance and the like (remember doing that getting home from the local kids disco which I'd get home adap from so I could tape Mikes show for the latest rap tunes by acts like Roxanne Shante etc -- preferred that to all the rock stuff at the disco!!!) I went very much with the underground trends with Ska and Nutty Boy being my first love and then onto Hip Hop, Electro with Soul always being in the background bubbling along Then came House music and boom it was lift off!! I became a bit of a trainspotter but not huge and soon enough I thought it was about time I invested in a set of SL1200s and I loved that passage of my life Even with my love of dance I still had a good few of my mates into guitar based stuff and I kept my hand in with Big Country, The Alarm, U2, The Smiths etc. I've kept that and loved a bit of Oasis and the whole baggy indie house scene
But it's house and soul that has my heart and has done for nearly 30 years now. Love it
Don't take away the music, it's the only thing I got --It's my piece of the rock

being a child in the sixties with dozens of aunts and uncles who were teens or early twenties i was showered with all the fine music of that decade.Then as a teeneager myself i was a fan of the holy trinity of rock music. i then listened and enjoyed all sorts of music ever since. never did get a taste for country music though.

In the late 60s i became aware of music as i have a sister and brother who were both in the mid teens . We also had an uncle who lived a very bohemian lifestyle i.e. drank loads and smoked strange smelling ciggies. In 1970 he went away for the weekend to a place called the Isle of Wight for some music festival. He came back having lost all his possessions but apparently had a wonderful time seeing his favourite group the Who. He also saw Hendrix, the Doors, Melanie, ELP, Donovan and Sly & The Family Stone. Having disappeared for about a week his boss fired him and he was surviving on 'national assistance'. It was during this period he also got kicked out of his flat for not having paid the rent for 3 months. So my mum couldnt see her youngest brother on the streets so he came to live with us. One day he came home pissed and fell asleep with a joint still burning in his hand. He dropped it and it set fire to the foam lining of our brand new sofa. When my Dad come home from work he kicked him out. Once again he had lost all his possessions and a roof over his head. Among his possessions was a load of vinyl records.The only one I remember was called TOMMY.From that came our love of rock music for me and my two elder brothers.
Sadly he passed away 3 years ago and when the Police broke into his flat he was found with a bag full of weed (at the age of 73!!) . He was also the only uncle who supported Rangers so was like a God to me.

We never had a record player until I was about 12 and most of the records my dad bought were shite and most of the ones I bought before punk were shite too with the odd exception. Led Zepp, Quo and Deep Purple were very popular in the 6th Form Common Room so it was impossible to avoid them - never really go DP but have always liked Zepp. But despite all that I never really got metal type stuff and hated prog rock which nobody played anyway. Lots of people liked Pink Floyd but i thought that was boring too. Queen were good around that time and looked like being a proper band up until Night at the Opera and then they went a bit soppy. Dr Feelgood were a turning point. Bought Malpractice and loved that and then punk sort of followed on from there, and whilst The Jam weren't really punk they kind of followed on from the Feelgoods and later on The Clash moved everything forward with London Calling and that whole New Wave era was fantastic with lots of types of genre coming through under the same banner. I was more new wave than punk. When it faded I lost interest a bit and hated all that Spandau Duran type stuff, and The Smiths were a bit OTT. Throughout that time I've loved the Beatles, Stones and Who and mostly it's been British bands I suppose but I've enjoyed a lot of other stuff along the way such as Nilsson, Kate Bush, Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean, Prince and so on. Mostly it's quality MOR rock/pop which doesn't over-indulge itself and that's how I like it.

Got into glam as a nipper - watching T Rex / Bowie / Roxy / Slade / Sweet etc on TOTP at the time they seemed to have been beamed in from another world (and aged 7-8 I wasn't discerning enough to realise the difference between the 'art' of Roxy and the manufactured pop of Sweet).
Wanting something more grown up, but totally disinterested in metal or prog, I became obsessed with the 60s, starting with the Beatles & Stones & Who but moving on to Small Faces, Kinks, Motown etc...so for me when punk happened everything else just fell into place - it was like the 60s for my generation. The Clash may have sung "no Elvis, Beatles or the Rolling Stones", but we all knew really punk was only one or two steps removed from that lot - but a million miles away from Floyd & ELP.
As much punk got predictable, along came new wave / post punk / ska etc and I loved bands like Gang of 4, Au Pairs & the Bunnymen. Anyone remember those Sunday night gigs at the Lyceum where you'd get 4 or 5 brilliant new-ish bands on one bill?
The NME educated me in the roots of punk and so I got into the Stooges, Velvets etc...but at the same time, at all the parties I was going to, whilst the boys fought over the record deck (Buzzcocks vs Lynyrd Skynrd, Clash vs Zep, punks vs old school rockers)...the girls would sneak in and put on Chic or Earth Wind & Fire, and I started to love disco too.
Early-mid 80s I thought things were getting a bit boring so I started digging into funk, a bit of jazz, old r'n'b, northern soul - compilations on labels like Charly and Ace. I also enjoyed bands who were experimenting with electronic sounds like New Order, DAF and Cabaret Voltaire...then a mate gave me a copy of 'Hip Hop Be Bop' and I heard Afrika Bambaata between bands at a Clash gig...which led me to electro & rap. This in turn led to the rare groove scene, go go (Trouble Funk live - wow)
I loved the Smiths and Jesus & Mary Chain...but aside from them found mid 80s rock pretty awful - bands like the Wedding Present just turned me off.
...and so being on a diet of funk, electro and electronic bands, when house came along it just seemed perfect timing. House music culture as it was then before the superstar dj thing got silly, was much more for me than rock culture.
I was lucky enough to work in the house scene for best part of 20 years - got heavily into the "anything goes" balearic vibe...but was so immersed in it all that I missed a few good rock bands who I only caught up on years later.
These days I really do listen to anything and everything. Music and football are my two abiding passions - the good thing with music is you can change - if an act you like releases a duff album, you move on and find someone else...we must all have our moments where we'd like to do that with Rangers, but of course rules is rules...
