Requested his £2m bonus for keeping Palace in the Premier League early, then walked out. Classy. Football really is a sewer.

I'm assuming that he requested the 2m in advance of the season starting?? he was pretty damn sure of his self, wasn't he? they hadn't even kicked a ball ....
what an idiot...... especially as he had the opportunity to pay it back....

Poor old Platini had to wait nine years for his bonus.

No, take your bonuses early and often, as any banker will tell you.

But he had already earned his bonus keeping them up, finishing 11th.

Indeed. But somewhat underhand to request it be paid early so that he could walk out and leave the club in the lurch two days before the season started. Presumably, given the outcome, the tribunal agree.

Yeah it is, but it took Palace a long time to pay him for the season before.
Seems to me they didn't trust each other

Btw, didn't Pulis fall out with the Palace hierarchy because he started talking about better facilities and they didn't want to waste money on such grand schemes? (This was before the American money came in).

It was in respect of the season that they stayed up with him in charge, but was payable at the end of August (the beginning of the following season). It seems he asked for it to be paid early, and the club did so, presumably unaware that he would walk out a couple of days later. Had they not agreed to pay it early he would seemingly have had two options; walk away without it or stay until it was paid.

In which case, it seems like he was hard done by then? If he kept them up for an agreed bonus of 2m, surely he should have been paid it, irrelevant of whether he stayed on the next season?
or am I missing something here??

He wasn't contractually entitled to it until a future date. I'm guessing he didn't tell the club he would be leaving when he asked them to pay it to him early.

That makes sense - no doubt him staying at the club had something to do with the contract too, as they would not have won the case....

I know nothing about the man personally, but clearly there is a God of Football Karma who's seen his teams play 'football'.

He actually played good football with Palace. WBA are a team much like Stoke IMO so I believe he just makes the most of the resources at his disposal. Anyway, a 2 million bonus is a snippet at what he got Palace in keeping them up so who gives a sh*t?

Ya, fair point about Palace actually, Toast.

But he was at Stoke for ages and had ample time to change the personnel and tactics and didn't. It was Neolithic football.

True but the then why try to fix it when it ain't broken?

When did he get them up, 2008? They've had 8 years in the top flight because of him and his football philosophy and didn't exactly over stretch their finances. I'd gnaw your arm off for a piece of that even if the football is dull. Better then getting your rear ends whooped on a weekly basis and having spent zillions of sheets on useless w@ankers.

Clubs like Stoke and WBA, and like us really, are a one bad season away from a potential meltdown so you can kind of understand that the tried and tested tactics which are bloodying noses every season, remain a consistent theme with him. Would Stokes record over Arsenal still be as impressive if he's dropped the heavy antics and adopted a more flouncy nice football approach on a vastly limited budget?

All fair points. I think he's a cracking manager, but I couldn't deal with the style of football!

Yes, this story was quite well known locally. He was due it in instalments over the following season. Requested it early then jacked. Classy bloke eh.

I can see both sides of the story but if my employer gave me £2 mill bonus for basically doing my job I wouldn't be jacking the job in. Football is another world.
