Squad taking shape 18:21 - Jul 13 with 7146 viewsBAWHoops

Squad looking stronger and stronger I think

GK - Ingram/Smithies
RB - Furlong/Perch
LB - Robinson/Bidwell
CB - Lynch/Hall/Caulker/Onouha
CM - Henry/Borysiuk/Luongo/Cousins
AM - Chery/Gladwin/El Khayati
WM - Petrasso
ST - Polter/Washington/Mackie/JET

Fairly obvious that we need to bring in 2 wingers and perhaps a striker, but it's a very well balanced squad at the moment

JET we can discount. Think Mackie is a bonus not an expectation now sadly.

With Borysiuk and Cousins we may have the legs for a 4-4-2 now. Can see us setting up Leicester style, although maybe Chery wide cutting in isn't ideal.

4-3-3 with Luongo in the middle and Chery Washington either side of Polter?

Question marks over Luongo and Gladwin glaring. Need to figure them out fast.

Would imagine it's going to be 2 midfielders sitting (Cousins and Luongo) with Chery playing off of Polter.

Two wingers either side.

Next couple of signings really are key

If it's a four man midfield it's definitely for Washington up top in a front two I think. JFH has already suggested he's thought about tactical changes to better accommodate him.

Still annoying that we don't yet know if Washington can play left sided inside forward in the 4-2-3-1 because we were wasting months flirting with Hoilett.

If we didn't buy any players from now we couldn't play with wingers. I'd play a central 4-3-1-2

Still think we are a long way short of a promotion team but promising additions so far which should make us competitive in the top half

I know TÅ‘zsér's an invisible man but he's still our player isn't he? What's his current situation. I know he was left out of Hungary's Euro squad. Is he injured or what?

The problem with Washington is that I don't see a way to accommodate him without pushing Chery out to the wing, where he's much less effective.

When Hasselbaink bought him, Chery was barely getting a game. His excellent form at the end of last season does give us a problem, 'cause he won't be half as good if he's asked to play somewhere other than number 10, and we can't have a number 10 and 2 up front.

Still no wingers, playmaker or another finisher?

Hard to beat, with nothing but set pieces for goals?

Agree with Dave, encouraging signings and shape of squad looks decent, but lacks depth and quality for a promotion campaign.

I suspect top half and if it punches above its weight maybe a flirtation with the play offs.

I'm actually fine with that. Progress and strategy seems good given the years of nonsense.

Sandro.... oh that problem Sandro.

Is he with the squad?
I would certainly hope not as I could see a disruptive influence there and I hope JFH has banished him a la Kenny Jackett action at Wolves. We need harmony and spirit and no big time Charlies thinking we're beneath them.
I'm surprised Caulker and JET have been welcomed back into the fold but if it were me I'd have them gone in a shot IF they showed any sign of grumbles or attitude.

My other concern is Washington.
If he's not first choice and playing up top I could see him looking to engineer a move off the back of Norn Iron on fire exploits this summer. I cant base this on anything and maybe he's not that sort of fella, my hope is he finds his shooting boots and bags goals a plenty for us. Just dont see him forcing his way in once he returns from his extended flip flop wearing.

SO we're about a month away... looking forward to it.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Personally I really like the 3-5-2 but the point is we now have options...

Squad taking shape on 09:42 - Jul 14 with 5216 viewsBAWHoops

Personally think we will line up more like this

...................Smithies.............
Onouha....Caulker.....Hall.....Bidwell
............Cousins.....Luongo............
Leckie?........Chery..........Washington
................Polter.....................

All the noise from the club makes it pretty clear that Chery is the main man this season, and if he is then he's going to want to play in his favourite position as a No.10.
He works best there with a hard working, run yer nuts off, physical striker, which is exactly what Polter is.
I think Washington is going to have to come in off the wings if he wants a game, that might mean reinventing himself a bit and also might mean working on something new. Could take a while, but he's young and we should give him time.

I think Cousins and Luongo are nailed on as the two sitting midfielders. When one breaks the other holds. I feel it's too soon to be throwing Borysiuk in and expecting him to be up to speed.

What we can see is that the last signing is key. The right winger needs to be an outlet and willing to work hard.
The more the midfield and wingers press high up then the more mistakes the opposition make. Those mistakes will allow Chery to pick up the ball in a dangerous position. His natural talent and quick thinking will then lead to him creating chances.

I think this is a difficult year for automatic promotion, Newcastle should walk it then you have Derby, Villa, Norwich, Sheff Wed likely to push for 2nd and usually we have 2 or 3 teams come from nowhere to do well.

Personally I'd be happy to have a better season than last time, more excitement and end it with a team capable of challenging the year after which I think is realistic.

On the contrary I don't feel Luongo has really done anything to look nailed-on. Yeah Borysiuk is new but he was signed because he was required.

4-2-1-3 could be an option & make good use of the squad. The 3 forwards would also allow us to press high up the pitch.

GK: Smithies / Ingram / Lumley
RB: Perch / Furlong
CB: Onouha / Hall / Caulker / Lynch
LB: Bidwell / Robinson
CM: Cousins / Borysiuk / Luongo / Henry / Doughty
AM: Chery / Gladwin
RF: Mackie / Petrasso
CF: Polter / JET
LF: Washington / El Khayati

I'm not saying this formation would work or be a good idea, but it does suit our squad could be a good option.

In theory we're not a million miles from the play offs. Last season was an absolute shambles, and we still ended up mid table.

I can't see Newcastle and Benitez not absolutely walking the league, so realistically that only leaves one automatic spot. There are other teams further along the route we seem to now be taking who you would think, if they hold on to their managers and key players, will be likelier than us to get it. Brighton and Wednesday are the obvious candidates.

I don't think anyone can really predict what's going to happen with Derby or Villa. Big wage bills and fans expecting to win 4-0 every week is a risky combination.

They key for us will be playing as a real team, something we arguably haven't done or been since the Rowlands/Bircham/Lee Cook era. That certainly looks to be what Hasselbaink is going for with this latest batch of signings. If it comes off, with the odd bit of real quality we've got dotted about the squad, there's no reason we couldn't sneak into the top 6. Also think it'll be important not to have fans jumping up and down about bringing back Neil Warnock the first time we get a 0-0 at HQ. Which might well be the Leeds game.

I totally agree re. Luongo. OK, it's still early days, but he has delivered next to nothing from an attacking perspective and defensively, he is weak.

My yardstick for players is always how many game-changing contributions they have made. Has he made any yet, really? Mind you, you could add some others to the list of those who haven't, yet.....

I'm not subscribing to this 'Newcastle will walk the league' stuff. This division is much more about spirit, organisation, consistency and being functional rather than having the best players. Look at Brighton last season, or Burnley every bloody time they are in the division - much more about the collective in the Championship.

They will likely be up there, but they have massive issues to overcome before they can be considered chamions-elect. Norwich are much more likely IMO...

Usually I'd agree, but Benitez is a class above anything else in the league as a manager as well. He'd already half turned them round by the end of the season, they just ran out of games. Add players like Ritchie and Gayle to a midfield of Shelvey and Colback, and they're halfway there already.

I think you're right about the importance of spirit and organisation, which is why if we get it right we might be in with a shout this season. But at the same time, we went up under Redknapp with no particularly noticeable team spirit, and a squad full of ageing "star players."

Yeah we did, but we definitely didn't 'walk the league' and that was with about 80 million times the wage budget of anyone else!

I'd also be surprised if they are not bloody amazing at times, but you need more than big names to win the championship. It's been a long while since those players have had to scrap like fck 3 times a week against opposition that will see them as a major scalp and the team to beat...

This Newcastle team much better than our one under Harry. Not only have they not got a complete divide in fans and manager. They also have kept key players, made fantastic signings, and a manager that has won the Champions League and was with Madrid last season. If they solidify their defense they should walk it
