Our DoF 23:14 - Jan 12 with 7749 viewsHunterhoop

He said when he started that he wanted us to become a club that gave youth players a path through to the first team.

Ryan Manning was his first signing.

Since he's been DoF the following have come through from the youth teams and made their debuts for the first team:

Lumley
Kpekawa (sold for a fee)
Furlong
Hamalainen
Kakay
Doughty
Shodipo
Manning
Eze
Comley
Grego Cox
Pretrasso (full debut, he made one sub appearance before)

Prohouly and Paul have also made the bench.

That's since Jan 2015.

You can say it's the managers who've picked them, but then, given he's been criticised for the managers we've hired, he surely must get some credit for the above, no?

He's the only constant, as the DoF, on the playing side, and he said this was an objective when he started.

And tonight, we're waxing lyrical about some of them. Others we're excited about. And, yes, some won't make it...and ALL of them will go through rough patches.

But this is the QPR we used to be. This is the QPR we all said we wanted after the disastrous Hughes and Redknapp regimes.

Personally, I think we need to allow at least another 2 more, maybe 3, full seasons to judge his performance and impact as a DoF. But there are clearly green shoots. Green shoots of the variety we wanted.

He is not the devil incarnate.

Support him and support the club.

Brilliant post Hunter 👏👏👏

Wouldn't it be nice to think he might get at least three years.

Hunter,

This is probably my favourite post ever. I considered one like this after the Ipswich and Wolves games but didn't think I could handle the hate and negativity that would eventually be directed at that list of players.

Well done QPR Les.

Anyone who continues this black agenda or jobs for the boys bollocks can quite frankly, fvck right off.

Here's hoping!

Nothing wrong with changing your mind on something either, LBlock!

And remember, you were positive before hand on the match thread. Think you said you thought we'd win. Bit of positivity from the whole fanbase wouldn't go amiss, and doesn't cost us anything. Think how these young lads will feel if the crowd get right behind them when we play Fulham! It can only help.

Our DoF on 08:17 - Jan 13 with 4959 viewspaulparker

Good to see youngsters coming through but lets not carried away
Everyone wants Les to succeed and mistakes have happened along the way but a lot of good has happened to ,we have sold players who don't want to be here or are earning to much and for a profit as well, we have to keep taking these gambles with foreign players or lower league lads the championship now is like a Prem 2 some of the transfers this year have been mental and that will only continue
so its vital Les keeps up the good work and the board back Ollie , forget this promotion guff we cannot compete at the moment but we can play football the right way and on occasion beat the big boys
as a QPR fan all I want to see is a team full of honest pros and that we give it a go
the football under JFH & Ramsey was dire hopefully we have seen a chink of light now as
I hate this talk lately of we are QPR its always been crap
if we win 3 on the bounce and then lose 3 on the bounce so be it but give me this team last night over the last 3 years all day long

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I was just waxing lyrical about this with Mini Dorse. Seeing younger players make the First XI or the match day squad really makes me proud of the team. More so than when you see the latest merc holding up a club shirt whilst the grin never quite reaches his eyes.

Great post Hunter

Some, if not most will possibly not make the grade but I'd rather we give these a kids a chance that just carry on as a parking lot for has been collecting a big payday.

The crowd need to understand though that these kids will make mistakes and have bad games and we need to take that in our stride and let them learn rather than slaughtering them.

It does feel homely having players from the youth set-up in and around the squad.

I agree LF should get some credit, that list is probably longer than the preceding 20 years. Equally, I don't think people should get quite so hysterical when he's criticised. Criticising someone doesn't mean you hate them, any more than giving them credit means you love them. There's very little middle-ground on this messageboard.

Excellent post Hunter, I'm sure most Rangers fans feel the same - summed up when the R's contingent sang, "Ryan Manning, he's one of our own" as he left the field towards the end. That was great to hear.

For me, this is clear evidence of the positive work that Ferdinand has done and the profound impact it has on the club as a whole. While we have been somewhat forced down this route because of FFP implications, Ferdinand has seized the opportunity and made the most of it.

There are not many out there who would want to do that, or put their neck on the line to see it through, so we can look at this list here and be very satisfied with how it's turned out so far. There are still risks, and it could still turn out a worse in terms of performances, results and even stunting development of youth in the wrong circumstances. But that hasn't happened, and I've been mildly surprised and impressed with how well so many of our kids have coped to date.

It's a remarkable turnaround from what went on in the years before, and crucially, it goes beyond the players because it helps unite the club. That list is proof that if you work hard, there is a pathway to the first-team, and there is an opportunity to break through.

That surely galvanises the staff and gives them much greater purpose beneath first-team level. They know their hard work may pay off and the kids they're developing have an opportunity and a platform to flourish and shine. Everybody comes to work everyday more motivated than before.

It gives us much greater clout when it comes to trying to sign young players or coaches from elsewhere too. Before, we were selling the idea to kids and their parents of a potential opportunity to play in the first-team instead of sitting in the development squads or reserves at bigger clubs. Now we can show them, look at the list, and this may well allow us to attract higher quality players at that level in the first place. Maybe if Josh Laurent waited, he would have had his chance to shine here too, but at the time, there wasn't proof. Only words.

The production line is an important part of any football club and its pulling power. Being able to prove that you can develop and bring through professional grade players is vital inside football circles.

When we sign youngsters or even kids on loan, the parent club want to know they're going to be looked after properly and have an opportunity. If you have a good reputation, this makes these deals easier to achieve and word continues to spread around.

It's also important the other way. If you send players out on loan, who have been developed well and are decent human beings who behave appropriately. That also sends out a message about who you are and how you work. It can lead to future business opportunities, because having a reputation for being able to develop professional grade players is important and can generate important revenue streams. Every little helps, it's often overlooked, but we sold Cole Kpwekwa to Barnsley in the summer and I couldn't have imagined that happening prior to Ferdinand's arrival and all of these players on the list have seen their resale value increased.

Whilst i agree that Sir Les deserves some credit as well as criticism, I agree with this particular post. You need to take the middle ground on most issues for at least long enough to see the view in both directions. To be a successful club you need to get a lot of ducks lined up and facing the right way. A win at Reading is fantastic and it goods to feel about the team again, but it shouldn't be used as a platform to declare that everything is fine now and the ducks are lined up. There's a hell of a lot of work to be done and I'm more than hopeful that Les can learn a few lessons along the way and grow into the job, which as an extremely difficult one at any club, more so at this one. It was never going to be easy to turn things round but we do look to be turning at last, and whatever has gone on in the past is mostly history now - whether its good or bad. No point in digging people out because they were critical of something or the other in the past - move forward and hopefully enjoy.

I don't think anyone is digging anyone out, El.

That's your inference and wasn't implied.

We're so quick to jump on the negatives, perceived mistakes, and problems than acknowledge so e excellent work in the last 24 months. That's all. I felt it was an important point to make.

The fans need to get behind this excellent work, and, when at games, back these young players vocally even when they make mistakes.

I really enjoyed that when Shodipo ran the ball out of play trying to beat his man against Blackburn, the lower loft clapped him. Exactly the right spirit.

Hunter,
I commend your statement to the house.
Seeing younger players stepping up is more exciting than the days of HR's expensive and increasingly desperate signings. Anyone who wants to come and boo is better off staying at home or 'enjoying' their football elsewhere.

"Thank you for supporting Queens Park Rangers Steep Staircase"... and I thought I'd signed up for a rollercoaster.

Very true - I guess the issue has been legitimate criticism of Les (and every person in every football club should receive genuine feedback to act on) has often been subsumed by people making bizarre histrionic accusations of Les being the leader of the Black Masons

I was just agreeing with what Dejr vu said, I'd agree with your sentiments entirely when it comes to young players. They do need to be given a chance. What Doughty did last night - coming on for five minutes and getting stuck in as we try to hold the points - that sort of thing should have been happening before now. It's not just about the very best young players - some of the other youngsters can do a job when required if the rest of the team knows what it's about. Hopefully we'll now define how we want to play as a club and make it easier for young players to fit in when their chance comes. For whatever reason it's taken a long time to get here, but it's a good feeling.
