It's a bloody minefield out there so I'm looking for advice on buying a laptop for my new job. I'll be running a smallish children and young people's charity in H & F.
I'll need the usual Microsoft office stuff to run well and decent storage. Will do the odd presentation on it as well so maybe decent speakers.
I'm getting lured in by the Leneovo Yoga and Surface Pro as I take a lot of notes as I am currently still pen and paper which is great but limited because it then takes time to convert to computer. I'm not sure if the the stylus idea works or is a gimmick and I'll lose out in other areas.
I have looked at the:
XPS 13 HP Envy Ideapad
Budget is up to £1k but £750 would be ideal.

I bought a Lenovo for around £600 (£100 off) from John Lewis about six months ago. I use it a lot on the internet and it is quick, reliable and has decent storage. I don't use it for work but my daughter's boyfriend works for a large IT company and they use a lot of Lenovo.

I currently have a Lenovo. It was noticeably cheaper than your budget and so is possibly not a good comparison, but I hate the keyboard; it is far too flimsy and regularly fails to register key presses.
I have a client who uses the HP Envy and it seems a far better product, but I'm probably not comparing like with like.

Got an HP Envy a year ago and it's brilliant, best I've had for years after a number of dodgy Acers which tended to last about 12 months - full disclosure I'm not very careful with them and they spend all day every day bouncing round in a bag on my back.

I got an Asus about 6 years ago and it's still alive and basically well. Seemed like good value for money although it refuses to play my You Are Your Own Gym (Intermediate Level) DVD. If you don't have that DVD I'd recommend it as a brand.

Fella who was Project Manager at "the worlds leading digital media broadcaster" on my last job was a a techie He is brilliant at his job and had all the kit The hardware he seemed to use the most was one of those Surface Pro things. The stuff he produced on that was really impressive
For me, my work has always provided me with Dell machines. I haven't got a clue about them really but all I know is after a couple of years they always seem steam powered What's the charity by the way?

So after all that I kinda ignored all the suggestions and went with a ASUS Zenbook flip from AO. It was reduced by £200 with a further 10% off so I got it for £530 which I thought was a bit of a bargin.
Whilst I have the power to go and buy a MacBook I just don't think I would ever do it justice. It will very much be Microsoft Office and internet usage for me so this should do the trick. I can always buy some decent speakers if the sounds is naff.
Plus being the boss means I cam always upgrade and hand it down to an underling!!

Whilst I dream of being able to do all sorts of flashy designs on one of those Yoga, Spectres or Surface Pros, it is just that, a dream.
The charity is a brand new one called the Young Hammersmith & Fulham Foundation. It's part of a wider Young Peoples Foundations movement fronted by John Lyons Charity in response to the cuts of local authorities youth budget (and other strands of children & young people funds) and also to strength the sectors ability to receive greater levels of income from independent grant makers.
