A settled team 13:40 - Jul 18 with 1174 viewsSuperhoop83

If there's one thing everyone on here agrees (I think!) it is that we have to develop a settled team and playing style. Whilst players should have some flexibility, it is ridiculous to build a squad of players who don't know from one game to the next whether and where they're playing.

As such, I hope that last year's shambles was Olly's attempt to see who could do what, with a view to building a good and settled team this year. I'm no coaching genius but I am convinced that, at this level at least, having a settled team and squad is crucial.

Based on the current squad, I'd pick the following team and stick with it for at least 3 games:

Smithies
Furlong, Onuoha, Hall, Bidwell/Robinson
Wszolek, Luongo, Scowen, Manning
Freeman
Smith

Subs: Ingram, Lynch, Borysiuk, Cousins, Ngbakoto, Washington

Suffering since 1978.

agree entirely with the sentiment, just not with the team :)

Manning shouldn't be out left wing, Yeni should be.

Wzolek, Luongo/Scowan, Manning, Yeni for me.

Actual wide players (HI HUNTER!) on the wings, two central midfielders with plenty of energy and bite in the tackle.

Can we not knock it?

I would much rather play 4-3-3 personally, but that would mean dropping Smith and Washington as neither can play as a lone striker.

We have the CM personnel for 3 in the middle and the strikers that suit 2 up top. But if you do both of those you have to drop our best and most creative outfield player in Wzsolek, so I think the compromise is to do what Jeff suggests and play 4-4-2 - only because we have to play Washington after backing him and it suits everyone. Sylla > Smith though, all day.

HI JEFF!

Agree with the sentiment expressed by you both.

However, I'd go with the following:

(at home)

Smithies
Furlong - Onouha - Hall - Robinson
Wszolek - Luongo - Scowen/Manning - Freeman
Washington
Smith/Sylla

Washington would be asked to track back to support the central midfield when we're out of possession, but get up on the shoulder of Smith/Sylla when we have the ball.

I don't think Yeni has a clue how to play as a genuine wide winger. Looks completely lost to me out there when he plays. No idea where to stand, what runs to make, what to do....even though he clearly has some talent once he has the ball. Freeman has played LW before and could do a job in the way Rowlands did on the right a decade and more ago.

(away from home)

Furlong - Onouha - Hall - Robinson
Wszolek - Manning - Luongo - Scowen - Freeman
Smith/Sylla

I'd have a midfield 5, with one of Luongo/Manning/Scowen/Freeman pushed forward playing at the tip of a central midfield 3 behind the target man, but really creating a midfield 3, supported by Wszolek on the right and someone on the left.

I can't decide whether Freeman is better at the tip of the central midfield, and Manning wide left OR Manning/Luongo at the tip, keeping Freeman on the left.

Not sure.

I normally bang on about 3-5-2 but I'm not convinced we have the players for that at the moment (although the new American player Giles Phillips seems to have had some positive write ups).

I think we'll end up playing 4-2-3-1

Smithies
Furlong, Ned, Hall, Robinson
Scowen, Manning
Pavel, Freeman, Ngbakoto
Smith

I would really love to see 2 up top because I genuinely think that Washington + 1 would get the best out of him. I just doubt whether Ollie will play that way.

On the bright side:
We have Manning signed up
Caulker looks like he's off
Freeman looked brilliant last year
Both Cousins and Ariel might be available
So far, no-one is after Smithies
Eze is looking a good bet
Nice kit
Scowen's tache

On the s hite side:
I want to see another CB added to the First Team squad
Our left side of midfield might be a weakness
Someone might notice how good Smithies is
Any sign of Shodipo?
Awful placement of sponsor may well ruin a good kit
JET is, unaccountably, still employed by QPR
Haven't shifted El Kayate yet
Caulker looks like he's off. Please can it be soon?

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Agree with all that's been said. Clearly there will be various positions up for grabs, especially in mid park. At least two of the previous contributors have included Ngbakoto in their midfield but I just don't believe he will be considered over the many other candidates.
We will be playing either 4 or 5 in the middle depending on availability and our opponents - and for me he becomes seventh choice behind Freeman, Manning, Scowen, Luongo, Cousins and Wszolek.
Personally I would even put a re-integrated and rejuvenated Borysiuk in front of Yeni as I don't really see what it is he brings to the table - although he may be more effective this season having put his well documented difficulties behind him.
