Hughes- has anyone bought a bigger bag of shyte as this lot in three months? 21:52 - Feb 11 with 5426 viewsShotKneesHoop

This is a cut and past off Wikipedia on Mark Hughes "career"

In the summer of 2012, QPR brought a large number of high-profile signings with the intent of establishing themselves as a Premier League club. In came Kieron Dyer, Ryan Nelsen, Andrew Johnson, Robert Green, Samba Diakité, Fábio, Park Ji-sung and Junior Hoilett all before the start of the season.[73] Rangers' new-look squad, however, got off to an awful start as they crashed to a 5—0 home defeat against Swansea on the opening day of the 2012—13 Premier League season.[74] Hughes branded his players performance as "embarrassing".[75] Hughes then signed José Bosingwa, Júlio César and Esteban Granero but saw no improvement in results, going 12 matches without victory.[76] He was sacked as manager on 23 November 2012 after the team suffered a 3—1 home defeat to Southampton six days earlier and replaced by Harry Redknapp.[2][77][78]

Exactly why you shouldn't trust wikipedia. Dyer played 5 mins of NW's first Prem game in charge before getting injured.

Warnock brought us Shaun Wright-Phillips

In six days, Warnock brought in Joey Barton (free), Luke Young (undisclosed), Armand Traore (£1.3m), Shaun Wright-Phillips (£4m) and Anton Ferdinand (£3m), all on eye-watering salaries.

Fernandes' cheque book must have been showing scorch marks.

Yeah but we don't hate Warnock so Hughes gets the blame for all of it.

This is true - that really was Supermarket Sweep that week and the entrance of Bungle set the tone for his reign to date, ie chaotic.

People say he's a cracking businessman but I say he got flunked by Flabbio and the Dwarf, once you're letting deals go to the wore be prepared for path A or B on an immediate basis. At the time I thought and hoped he was just a patsy for the Mittals as for some reason the evil two didn't accept their offer -- probably because they were driving a harder bargain. Alas, it proved Bungle was on his own.
So in he came with no real plan other than to walk around the pitch before his first away game in a big old QPR scarf and commence his "look at me" ownership of the place. What cannot be excused though is that King Warnock didn't have a list of targets just in case the previous incumbents loosened the purse strings.

So we signed that list in a mad dash and I would say Barton done okay but didn't justify his wage (as well as being a knob), Young is instantly forgetable, Traore a wimp but with ability, Anton went from average to poor and SWP needs no comment.
Yet still King Warnock had us outside the bottom three, scraping and fighting due mainly to him not excluding the hero's of the previous season. There was spirit and he was disposed of too hastily -- probably easy to say that in hindsight.
Would we have signed better players with him at the helm in January? I'd like to think so.

The worst signing this club has ever made was Phil Beard -- only one man can carry that can.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Warnock was hamstrung by Ecclestone. He was left searching for cheap or free signings such as Gabbidon and Dyer, had to sell Gorrks to finance the DJ Campbell signing. His list of signings during that close season included Ashley Williams and Danny Graham from Swansea and of course Wayne Routledge who ended up at Swansea. Had he signed those three then neither Ferdinand the Third, SWP or Campbell would have been signed.

They weren't all shyte... QPR just made them that way LOL Certainly anyone who saw Bosingwa make his debut at the Hawthorns didn't think he was shite, that all came about after the incident at Harlington and the one sided attacks on him afterwards in the MB's etc. Granero was decent, Rob Green made the England squad whilst with us. Nelsen certainly wasn't shyte, Dyer never had a bad game for us, just injured all the time, César was a fans favourite... until the Villa away game :-) We'll never know how good Diakité could have been if there hadn't been a civil war in Mali as he looked like the next Viera at times, even Johnson did alright for us whilst he was here. For most it was the wrong club at the wrong time with the wrong manager. IMO.

The grass is always greener.

I appreciate your equanimity and largely share your opinons on those five signings.

Warnock may have kept us out of the bottom three, but iirc we were eighteenth and bottom three before we'd played another game following his dismissal. His league record that season was 4-5-11, 17 points from 60, well under than a point a game and nailed-on relegation form. Add to that a home defeat by Rochdale(!) and an undeserved late equaliser at the Dons and it's fair to say that Fernandes had genuine cause for concern that Warnock was taking us to immediate relegation.

Fwiw, I also dislike the bloke for justifiably calling El Hadji Diouf "lower than a sewer rat" at Blackburn but then going on to sign him at Leeds (where he described EHD as his "matador"). I dislike him for his re-appearance at the club with the apparent jockeying for the DoF job and late change of mind on the manager's position, causing unnecessary disruption. (I don't particularly care about the 'performance money' allegations Bazza raised the other day, though they do cast a shadow of doubt.)

For all of the above, I still love the bloke and am grateful for the way he brought a magnificent team together around Taarabt and gave us our best season since Ferdinand was sold. He'd never have to pull out his wallet for a drink if I was around.

I just like a clear perspective on things, too.

Although Warnock had very little time to spend the big money in that first window he still made a pigs ear of it and within a month was back to basically picking the same team that got us up with Mackie, Adel, Derry, Hill and Faurlin his star men.

Still the damage he did was easily reversible and not helped by an incompetent CEO giving out massive contracts, the following summer of Mark Hughes spending the club are still paying for now.

Good point.
There's a lot of classic fan hindsight in stuff like this.
No one was complaining about these signings at the time - I think a few people (myself included) thought he signed too many, but individually, at the time, they seemed decent.
Granero came with great references, and at least initially looked a class signing.
Nelsen was a good signing
Our entire fanbase was literally BEGGING him to sign Diakite after some great performances the previous season.
Fabio was a young loan, not much wrong with that, really.
Hoilett was widely seen as a coup.
Johnson was a decent striker at the time, but was probably ill-advised due to his injury worries.
Green was not an awful signing, but it was ruined with the later signing of Cesar.
Bosingwa had just won the Champions League - he should have been a better signing than he was.

Much as I despise Hughes, I still maintain that in Aug and Sept, had we got the two or three wins our play generally deserved (even Spurs fans were embarrassed about how they stole a 2-1 win against us at WHL), that season would have been totally different. But it just got worse and worse as confidence ebbed away.

Bare bones.

I remember SWP’s debut at Newcastle. He won MOM in a game we were very unlucky to draw.

didn't Rob green drop several clangers in the pre-season, causing Hughes to panic when Cesar was available?

(Remember the Bosingwa signing was a year after the Warnock trolley dash, so we already had some experience in this area and you didn't need to be a genius to anticipate the problems that might arise).

Yes we played some great football and totally dominated that game but ended up drawing 0-0. Think we had a similar home game v West Brom at that time which we should have won but didn't

I'm pretty sure SWP either hit the post or had a goal incorrectly called offside. Either way it was one of those sliding doors moments, he scores in that game and pushes on from there and becomes a QPR legend.*

That's right, would have been a terrific goal against West Brom. Think that was the same game Warnock publicly gave Faurlin a bollocking on the pitch at the final whistle.

I thought that a lot of our better/more enduring players from the Premier League experiment came via the tighter purse strings of the Tango and Cash era. Ok they were a little fragile of mind and body at times, but the likes of Faurlin, Taarabt, Helguson, Derry, Hill, Mackie and so on were paid a lot less than the guys who were supposed to replace them, but in the end the old brigade probably made the biggest contribution. It took a few years for those players to be assembled, and hopefully we can do the same now, - i don't think that we spent big money on the original promotion squad did we?
