Unfortunately we lost the game sadly cant find footage of the year after when the result was exactly reversed when we came from behind to win 2-1.
This was on the Tuesdays after the death of Diana (2-1 win) mins silence was slightly disturbed by huge numbers of late Rangers fans singing away outside the ground.
Decent finish, what hopes we had for him that didn't really come off.

Spencer as he's running to the away end there and pointing to his chest is shouting "I'm your fcking man" repeatedly. He'd only signed a few days before, along with Gavin Peacock (initially on loan).
The football side of that is Chris Wright was desperate to chuck some money at it but Stewart Houston wanted to assess what he had first, and also appoint Bruce Rioch as his assistant which was a disaster and also why Spencer didn't last with us - they had a big fall out over who was a "proper Scotsman"! Unfortunately, the season had already started, and it wasted valuable time. We missed out on Matt Jackson through dithering, he'd been there on loan, and looked very good, but Houston wouldn't pull the trigger. Typical Scotsman reluctant to spend money ;-) Spencer was fcking superb that season, nearly ended up top scorer in league having only been there for two thirds of the season. Ray Harford, then West Brom manager, infamously promised Wright if he was given our squad with Spencer, Sheron and Gallen up front the following season he'd win the league no problem. Didn't go well.
I've only very seldom seen highlights of that Reading game because it was a painful one for our family and whenever I see them it kills me all over again.
We drove down from Scunny and Grimsby with a car full as usual, stopped at a Little Chef for breakfast somewhere en route. After breakfast we're all out in the car afterwards waiting for my legendary grandfather Tom to "get a bloody move on" but he doesn't come out of the restaurant. Waiting for ages, dad and mates chuntering about "silly old git probably got lost" etc. In the end dad goes in to look for him, finds him basically sitting/slumped in the toilet of the Little Chef. Grandad, who was a moulder at the Steel Works in his day (making the moulds that they pour the molten steel into, tough man's work) shrugged it off, insisted he was fine, helped him up, back in the car. Dad never said anything to us, grandad enjoyed the rest of the day at Reading, sat with me in the side stand (I'm about 11/12 at this point), QPR fck it up... standard Saturday. Drove home.
Proper larger than life character my grandad. Well known and liked at QPR. Famous in the Goldhawk for continuously telling Margaret she should marry him and he'd show her how to run the pub. Also famous for taking everybody's money in the back bar to put on a greyhound he'd had a big tip on, then changing his mind when he got to the bookies and staking the whole lot on something else that lost while the original dog won.
Monday, grandad goes to pick our little cousin up from school as per usual, goes down again, on the playground. They managed to get him home and lay him on the sofa, and he's in proper trouble this time. He took his teeth out, said a few words, and died. Big heart attack. Probably had a smaller one on the Saturday before that Spencer game, so the doctors said.
My first experience of anything like that. Not really one I've ever got over to be honest. Miss him.

I was at that game, behind the goal that Spencer didn't score in, so couldn't really see what happened. I thought it was scrappier and closer in, but that was tidy. Seem to remember there was quite a lot of 'Michael Meaker's a homosexual' from our crowd. Times have changed.
Spencer was incredible for a while. Never seen someone move so quickly over the first metre. Seemed like him and Gavin Peacock had something good going between them and definitely seemed a cut above what we were used to, but passed to each other when there were better options on occasionally?

Yeh it's also weird stuff you remember. We won the game after that 1-0 at home to Sheff Utd, dreadful match, and Paul Danson was referee and had an absolute catastrophic mare of a time. Dad and me just sort of standing there at the back of Q Block there but not there, little mention in the programme, everybody patting me on my back and shaking my hand in the Goldhawk.
Incidentally, silly old sod, was renowned for his awful tips, always said we should have signed Clive Mendonca from Grimsby - Charlton did and went up, we signed Sheron for three times as much.

We didn't sign him on loan (despite what Wiki says), we signed him outright in November 1996. It was Peacock we got on loan for a month at first.
I've always thought that as soon as we knew Gallen was crocked for the season, if Houston hadn't pissed about playing the likes of Steve Slade and Lee Charles up front and dithered for two months before signing a proper forward in Spencer, we'd have been promoted.

That hat-trick was scored with his left foot, his right foot and his head, I believe he went off the boil after Rioch grabbed him by the throat during a dressing room argument at a friendly game at Exeter, I loved the bloke and I loved him when he scored at Port bloody Fail that infamous Sunday dinner time game when I managed to punch Danny Dichio on the top of his head during those wild celebrations.
Those were the days when we used to travel the length and breadth of the Country following QPR for no other reason than you always thought we'd be better next week. Anyone on here go to Grimsby that season? that was the game when Paul Murray stood in the middle of the pitch and put his arms out to our so called Managerial team of pricks who were stood on the touch line waving their arms around in some sort of a secret code, Murray's facial expression was saying to the pair of minges "what exactly do you want"? We lost 2-0 btw. ("Were not Arsenal anymore)

i remember it well because it was the first time I'd seen Rangers live for over 3 years as I spent most of the early to mid 90's skint. Elm Park was a funny little ground but I suppose younger Reading fans must think the same thing now when they visit Loftus Road for the first time.

Spencer was one of those players who came alive in the box, you knew if he got decent service he would make something happen. Also the slightest touch from a defender and he was on his way down. Great in the air for a small man.
Houston and Rioch? We would have done better with the chuckle brothers.

Not only that did he get the perfect hat-rick he also snapped someone's leg off in front of the Loft with the latest challenge I have ever seen at H.Q.
Ironically we did not win for 9 games after that which probably damaged our chances more than anything else that season, especially as we only finished 5 points off and threw the last game.

the Port Vale 4-4 game showed just how crap Houston and Rioch were... Someone video'd it for me (for some reason it was not shown live in London???). When looking at the TV coverage of Houston and Rioch they spent most of time telling the team to "Launch it to Hateley". Funny how QPR got 4 goals after Hateley had been subbed!!!

John Spencer is one of those players that divides my own opinion.
that first season he was terrific, scring goals for fun, but then I remember the last few month of his time here, when it was obvious we werent going to get prmotoed, and he effectively gave up, stopped trying and just did his best to engineer a trasnfer. That was thebeggining of the end for thre chris Wright era and led to our relegation.
I particularly remember a 3-0 loss at Stockport, were he barely got his boots dirty.

Definitely a link between life's and football's emotions even for more 'mature' fans like me and I guess the more passionate you are about football the more intrinsically the two are linked. My mum was from Windsor and died 9 years ago in October. My English relations were over for the funeral and stayed for a while. Jim Magilton was in charge and over that period we scored 4 goals in 3 consecutive games. My cousin, who is a Chelsea fan, reckoned they were in such good form cos my mum was now guiding them from a above. If that was the case, she soon lost interest as they quickly returned to type and Magilton was gone soon afterwards for (allegedly) punching Busaki
