Club Legends............ 12:42 - Aug 8 with 5551 viewskingsburyR

I see on twitter a journalist has wished West Ham Legend Phil Parkes a Happy BIrthday.

Can a player be a legend at more than one club?

Sir Les, QPR, Newcastle or Spurs. etc etc.......................

Surely it can only be one club.

Poor old Ray Wilkins always thought himself as a Chelsea legend. Due to my age I only remember him at Man Utd and later on.

Dont know why we bother. .... but we do!

I think players can be legends for a number of clubs. For me, I think it is the supporters who decide who is and isn't a legend and that will always be be contested along the likes of Adel. To some of the younger ones he is. To me (an older supporter) he isn't in the same league as Bowles, Marsh etc. I think Newcastle supporters think of Ferdinand the same as we do.

I sit in the other camp of the player should nail his colours to the mast.

If Sir Les was put on the spot who would he choose??????

you can be a legend at several clubs. Both Ronaldos would have to be legends at every club they played rather than just one of them.

What, old 'West Ham Phil'?

Coincidentally played 344 times for both clubs.

I see Ian Holloway as a QPR legend from his playing days. Ceaseless energy which helped more cultured players such as Wilkins. He did play around double the number of games for Bristol Rovers so probably highly thought of there.

Bobby Zamora, Rangers, West Ham and Brighton legend

My recollection of Holloway was that he was a standby for Simon Barker and they didn't often play together, mostly when Wilkins couldn't play. He was definitely Wilkins' legs when he did play.

IF the BobFather hadn't scored that last-gasp winner for us against Derby, would he still be regarded as a QPR legend?

I doubt it very much.

But he did and he goes down in QPR folk-lore forever.

So what makes a club legend - one special moment or years of unsung, loyal service?

Bit of both.

I have Macca as a legend.......but also Adel.

Stan tops the charts but he was a bit before my time.

I think I would have Zamora in as he coupled his PO winning goal with an absolute worldy at WBA. In an odd way, Samba Diakité could be considered a QPR legend just because he was Samba Diakité

The grass is always greener.

I think the term 'legend' itself is vastly overused nowadays and therefore devalued. Going back to the beginning of my time with QPR, that entire 75/76 team were legends based on what they achieved and based on the fact that their efforts have never (quite) repeated. I think after that, if you are talking about individuals then it can be a combination of loyalty, brilliance and hard graft that makes the legend status authentic. Don't know if it's middle-age grouchiness or a decreasing quality in our playing personnel, but current legends are a bit thin on the ground IMO

Imo you dont get legend status for one goal ..my choices would be
Mike Keen
Gerry Francis
Marsh
Stan
Ollie
Jim Gregory
Macca
Gallen

I used to live with this French guy who supported Marseille and says Chris Waddle was absolutely worshipped there. Blotted his copy book with most England fans. Always thought it was odd we were unaware of his French popularity over here. Sort of a reverse Cantona.

Indeed, as SWP would be considered for that goal against the scum and he's certainly not a legend-a sponger, yes, but legend no.

Ollie played 150 games for us, over 100 of them were alongside Barker so hardly a standby for him.
Ollie, Barker and Wilkins were a great midfield trio as they played together regularly.

Ollie gets in for me because of his playing and management, a self confessed piano carrier for Wilkins and seeing us through two different but difficult periods as manager
