Mobile Phone Buying Advice 12:51 - Sep 6 with 4316 viewsCliveWilsonSaid

My Moto G is finally giving up the ghost after 3 years solid service. I’ve been with O2 for about 8 years, now on a rolling £18ish monthly contract and been very happy with their service, etc. Previously with Orange who I didn’t like so much.

Now looking for a new phone. I bought my last phone direct from Motorola and been happy with it. Does everything I need. Text/email/calls/light internet browsing/Whatsapp/good camera/good file storage. I’d definately consider another Motorola but they’ve since been bought out by Lenovo who I’ve not heard great things about.

Finding it all a bit mind boggling. I’m not interested in iPhones or other high-end premium ‘Flagship’ phones, something along the lines of what I have will be fine. i.e. reliable and will last me a few years. If I have to go the contract route I’d rather 24 months max with around 1-2gig data. No more than £30 a month but preferably less, as all these extra life costs are starting to eat into my beer budget (£35 absolute limit for the right deal). There’s no panic, my old phone still works but will need replacing soon.

Any recommendations?

my phone isn't currently capable of receiving calls, let alone whatsapp.

anyway, general ludd tells me that what we gain through phone technology is not worth the cost to actual sociability, in terms of time spent glued to screens and the amount of hours i would have to be work to afford one that whatsapps, me being a manual low paid idiot. and don't even mention loss of attention span. It's all part of the big plan to dumb us down and distract us why they destroy the world so that they can have so much money they can't even 'kin spend it all.

lets talk, yah?

Two tin cans and 400 mile of string? Sounds like a plan I used to have with Vodafone right enough

Trouble is I don't think there is a "big plan". It's a bit like English football. Lots of conflicting "big plans"

Just got a Huawei P20pro. I'm on Vodafone and probably a poor deal paying approx £32 month contract for unlimited everything and 2GB, some dick in the Isle of Man costs me a fortune on texts since they won't get a phone capable of WhatsApp but I digress......
3 cameras(??) certainly produce a decent quality pic and main attraction was the 64GB memory so it lasts a good while hopefully. Only thing I've found a pain is the emails don't sync so well with pc as my windows phones did and that does cause a problem for keeping up to date with work emails as they don't update easily, also when read on pc don't show as read on phone and vice versa.
Transfer of all contacts, photos, video and files was fairly easy from Lumia windows phone and I'm not very tech minded so was pleased with that.

Got myself a Huawei Mate 10 Pro late last year. Only regret was that I didn't spend the extra £30 or so on a dual SIM phone as I want one for UK and one for Aus. Otherwise, can't really say much bad about it. Charges very fast and battery really does last a long time. The one I have is unusual in that there is no slot for an expansion card, but it does have 128Gb inbuilt. Extra cameras are good, but only if you use them. That said, as Karl said, they do produce quite decent pics. I previously had HTC phones and their cameras were poor, especially when at events where there is movement. I bought mine outright through Amazon and am on a £10 contract with BT, but that is due to the missus having BT at home. Also agree as to the seemless transfer of all stuff from the HTC to the Huawei was extremely easy, although as expected some apps that are HTC only won't work on the Huawei, a problem you will need to address when choosing something else that Motorolo. Good luck in your choice.

When you buy a car, you get what you pay for. A Mercedes is better than a fiesta.

Phones quite the opposite.

Apple is the most expensive, and every piece of equipment inside it is slower/smaller/worse. So the Apples are for people who want the inferior phone at a high end price for reasons of fashion. Apple performs as a ford fiesta. You're just buying the name. Apple don't even supply people with their spec list if you ask them, becauuse they know they are con artists cheating people and it becomes rather easy to see when the spec list is half as good on every item at an increased price. It puzzles me whether people don't realise they aren't very good or they know but they are so obsessed by following fashion anyway. It'll still do what you need, though, and of course, they are nice looking.

The Samsung is superior throughout the phone in terms of technology. And costs less.

The Sony is cheaper still and better still.

Speaking of phones. Anyone know when LFW is going more mobile friendly ?. I still get a blue bar running the length of some threads making them unreadable.
Apart from that issue my Samsung A3 is really good. Gets knocked about a lot because if my work but keeps going. Im on some weird business contract with a company called Plan. I say weird as i never heard of them before. My mates all thought it was micky mouse company but £30 p/m with unlimited everything seemed ok and they've been fine. Its on the 02 network still. Anyone use this company..?

I find LFW very mobile friendly, barring the occasional, though short lived ad nonsense, it performs well. I use an IPhone 6.

Why can't you replace the battery on a phone when it fails?

Agree with Tim re: Apple. Their stuff is good, no doubt, but just not as good as a reflection of the prices they charge and then there's the whole con over memory sizes.

That said, I do have an iphone 5 but it was given to me a couple of years ago when my gf upgraded and once the battery started playing up recently (causing it to shut down while still at 40% then when I turn it back on it shows 1% then switches off again quite soon) I had it changed. £50 and works absolutely fine now.

I went through a bit of a frenzy a couple of weeks ago thinking I needed a new phone and came up with the Honor [insert number, can't remember] as a good choice - has a good camera.

Luckily at the point that I'd decided that it would be £329 well spent I discovered that a bloke in the post office opposite Hammersmith Town Hall can fix it for £25. So that's good.

Honor 10 is rated consistently as best cheap smartphone.

If you can stretch a little further, the One Plus range regualrly match premium flagship specs but £200+ cheaper than a samsung or iphone

Well due to the fact I'm retiring in a couple of weeks I've got to hand in my Company mobile so I purchased a sim free Huawei P Smart thingy and I'm paying £15 per Month.
The last person in the World to ask is me about bloody mobile phones because I hate the bastard things but as everyone keeps constantly reminding me "you've got to have a phone you daft sod"
This new phone was an absolute dream to set up, downloaded my music and transferred all the necessary stuff emails etcetera effortlessly, its got an excellent screen size and two (yes two camera lens's) why the fck I don't know, I haven't used the camera.

The battery life is excellent too.

The only thing I've got against the phone is for the life of me I don't know how to pronounce the word Huawei !!!

I think it might be Hughie.

I never answer the phone anyway.

Bloody things.

Always luv yer posts Ted.

All the best for your retirement. Do you have any plans now ??

Yes I went though a similar frenzy last night. Luckily I found an online discussion about the problem I was having with my current phone (loudspeaker not working). Someone on it explained how they had removed the back of the phone, pressed it in a certain place and the problem had stopped. I tried the same thing and now my phone is fully operational.

Good thing because to be honest after looking at all the options, I didn’t like any of them. Of course now, everything I look at online is awash with mobile phone ads

Yeah that was the deal that caught my eye too. Although two things that sold me my Motorola G3 are no longer available.

1. The integrated flip cover.

2.The fact that despite having loads of places to put branding on the screen side, they chose not to.

Had a G3 myself for years but the G5 and now the G6 is far far better, have a look at reviews on trustedreviews.com, techadvisor.co.uk, techradar.com/uk

But really go to a shop and handle a few phones

I've also got a Huawei P20 Lite and it's great.
Got it for nothing in exchange for a £16.99 per month contract with ID (formerly Three)
Apple phones used to be better than the rest but these days other manufacturers have caught up and are way more affordable.
The camera on my phone is much better than on the new Iphone that my Mrs has from her work.
