I always thought it was ‘super Rangers’.

But then I always thought it was ‘said Leslie Ferdinand, said Leslie Ferdinand ‘, but then that became ‘sir Leslie, etc, etc’

The three ladies in the bottom picture at the table are Phyl, Barbara & Diane who were part of a little group of us who always stood to the right to the right of the goal at the front at all games home and away, Brian McC. will know them. I was talking to Phyl before the game last night and she told me that Barbara is in a very bad way and in need of 24 hour a day care. Keep her in your thoughts, she is one of the good ones. Some may remember when Marilyn, who works in the club and co-ordinated Stan's visits to LR, had her car accident many years ago, it was Barbara that used to drive her backwards and forwards to games once she was released from hospital and for quite a while afterwards whilst she rehabilitated.

The grass is always greener.

I remember those three ladies well from many away days throughout the 80's and 90's. Always said hello but never knew their names.

That's very sad news about Barbara

Sad news indeed about Barbara, Esox.

What lovely ladies! They'll always be remembered in our house for their incredible decency. When kid sister Debs and I used to stand in the Loft she was a nipper. The ladies took Debs under their wing and would bring her down the front of the Loft, down to their spot, out of harm's way when we all used to bounce around further up the terrace. I'd watch them as they fed her Twix and cups of tea and she loved it down there. After a while I stopped watching - she was so happy and they were so sound. We used to watch the highlights of the goals and you'd see the ladies celebrating and Debs in the middle of them, happy as Larry.

We're both back in Ireland now but we still chat about them and remember them.

It's hard to believe now but Phyl's son Simon (the really tall kid) is 50 this year and Diane is now 54. It's hard to believe the years have flown by so quickly. Tom English (the steward) is still going strong and is now a steward in the Paddocks, Ariel has emigrated to Italy but comes back to the odd game. Vicky doesn't go to games any more but Diane still writes to her every month or so. Bonds forged a long time ago at Loftus Road and never broken.

It was 'said Leslie Ferdinand' . Tony Incenzo misheard it , wrote about it in a programme and the football world changed it to 'Sir Leslie Ferdinand'.

I remember Tom looking after us in the Loft while he was a steward there in the 70’s.Back in the days when toilet rolls and bus ticket rolls used to regulars on the pitch after goals at the loft end.

Last saw him (Tom) 5 or so years ago down Fulham Palace Road and also stewarding at a HQ reserve match. He still had the sideburns and was looking well..he must be pushing 75 at least eh? He was like a surrogate Dad behind the Loft end goal.

Tom used to be a caretaker on Edward Woods Estate in the late 70s early 80s.People used to complain to him if we played football on the grass open spaces on the Estate. He would come and talk to us but would say ' do yourself a favour lads, pretend to leave, when I've gone home to my flat, come back and restart the match. I'll know not to open my door when the moaners come knocking".

I always make a point of saying hello at every home game.

I was talking to his daughter earlier in the season as I hadn't seen him at that time and I am sure she said he is in his 80's now. His legs are pretty shot but he is fully compos mentis and showing no signs of that changing.
I made up a little platform that hooked over the fence behind the goal for my son to stand on when he was around 3-4 years old and too short to see over the barrier. Rather than keep taking it in and out of the ground Tom used to store it in a cupboard somewhere in the ground and always have it ready for us when I got in the ground.

The grass is always greener.

Tom stewarding at the Loft end is as much a part of my memories of my first regular seasons in the late 70s / early 80s as any players. Legend.
Likewise Daphne and others pictured for my earliest awaydays.
There are people like this at every club worldwide who make football what it is.

Great thread and nice to know the history and a great tribute every time we win to the team and to Daphne who I never met but a great servant to the club...I will sing it with even greater gusto next time..

It won't be today or tomorrow when we finally take our seats in our new stadium, but I have always believed one thing very firmly - one of the four stands should be named after Daphne.
