Err....once you gain citizenship in the UK you are entitled to vote, and this is what the Labour party anticipated happening with a resulting increase in votes for them. Plenty of immigrants apply for and obtain citizenship. It was recently shown that immigration has actually suppressed wages in certain areas of the country - and these areas generally had a larger vote for leave in the referendum. Also, the CBI recently stated that wages have started to increase now as a result of fewer EU immigrants coming into the country, and more departing, as a result of the referendum result.

EU citizens have had no need to apply for UK citizenship, as they have previously been allowed to live and work here freely. My wife is an EU citizen and has lived and worked in the UK for 34 years, paying tax and NI. But she has never been allowed to vote in parliamentary elections, or the EU referendum. She has never suppressed anyone's wages, because she runs her own business, providing healthcare support to cancer survivors. I guess you'd be happy to send her back to her country of birth.

when the whole brexit thing gets a bit too much, i like to console myself with the thought that, whatever the outcome, the rich will still be rich and the poor will still be poor.

Christ, what would happen if anyone ever proposed real change?

Because brexit/remain are, ultimately, two sides of the same coin.

I'm done,

peace.

Err...far from it, where have I said that? I am an EU immigrant myself in Cyprus! Obviously, not all immigrants into the UK have had an impact on wages but it stands to reason that there would have been in some industries (such as the building industry for instance). And yes, your wife has not been allowed to vote, but my point is that she could have been had she applied for and obtained UK citizenship which I believe she is entitled to do.

Until two years ago she couldn't do it, because it would have meant giving up her own nationality. She's applying now, and it's costing us the best part of £2k. She's lucky because she can prove her uninterrupted work record. Other EU citizens - especially women who have stopped working to have children or care for elderly parents - are being knocked back.

Can I say once again say you should not use "EU citizen" as an overall group to imply restrictions as it does not apply to nationals of a particular EU country. My wife is an EU citizen and has worked in the U.K. for the last 50 years paid tax and NI and can vote in parliamentary elections and all referendums and does not have to apply for any right to remain when we leave.

So your wife is Irish, then? A somewhat different situation. Spouses who are citizens of the other 26 ("mainland"*, if you prefer) EU countries do not have those rights. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

* Excluding Cyprus.

Edited to add that Cypress is not a mainland country.

Quite right but still an EU citizen. My point being that the CTA has been conveniently ignore when the talk is about EU citizens. I do think any EU citizen who has lived here for more than 5 years should be able to apply for settled status without a having to pay for by privilege.

Slightly off tangent but one definition of the word citizen is

"Definition of citizen - a legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized."

As I understand the EU is neither of the above two can you really be an EU citizen.

Going off at a tangent - what's the difference between a British subject and a British Citizen.

There was a question on The Chase the other night, "What was the first TV programme in which the Duke of Edinburgh participated live?"

I guess it had been pre-recorded a while back, else the obvious answer would have been Crimewatch.

I just happened to catch a snippet of that woman (victim) on This Morning, yesterday...?

Someone has filled her head with the idea of making the most of it and then some. Cringingly appalling.
Join the queue of the other thousands of people who get the run around from insurance companies when involved in an accident.

In the Metro yesterday she was upset that they didn't even send a bunch of flowers.

FFS, how many other people involved in RTA's get flowers from the other party??

On top of that, she said they didn't say 'sorry'. Well, not defending Prince Philip who's a bit of a buffoon but insurance companies tell people not to say sorry as that's then an admission of fault. You say nothing and let the appropriate authorities sort it out.

Clearly milking it for max. compensation.

He is entirely right, of course. But some of them did have a plan (eg Crispin Odey) - financial gain.

Tusk works for the EU which in the opinion of many gives him carte blanc to say what he likes. Now if a brexiteer had said something similar about remainers it would be all over the media and James O'Brian would be spitting blood.

Oh honestly who gives a sht? Hunt described the EU as like a Soviet Prison and Johnson, among many other things, said it was following in the footsteps of Hitler and like a concentration camp guard. And whenever the EU says something the exit people jump up and down and say "true colours true colours project fear project fear" and whenever the exit people say it James O'Brien and the like get up on their high horse about use of language and on and on it goes.

They're like pathetic little children on both sides, 50 days to sort this mess out and they're still behaving like this.

50 days? Try two and a half years and counting.

If I were Donald Tusk, having to deal with bunch of entitled delusional fckwits who can't even agree among themselves what day of the week it is, I think my language would be quite a lot less retrained.

Those who campaigned with no plan... I.e Gove, Johnson, Davis.

It's very hard to actually get that wrong unless you've only read the headlines from the numerous usual outlets who are purposely obfuscating the nature of the actual quote. A perfect example of what's created this atmosphere where facts and fiction are completely interchangable...

He is right. The likes of Boris Johnson bamboozled a lot of people into voting leave. He surely must have know difficulties we would encounter but wanted to portray himself as a sort of saviour and wanted to be the next prime minister. Sadly a lot of voters fell for it hook line andsinker and have left us on $hit street.
