On the point of unchanging opinions, that's why I found James O'Brien's interview with Vote Leave organiser Oliver Norgrove so interesting (it's on page 31 of this thread, about 15 minutes long).

He goes through some of the arguments he formerly found convincing. For example, he was really hooked on the idea of the German car industry forcing the German government into changing the EU's rules because they needed us more than we needed them.

I did listen to that and was slightly confused at the start as I could not understand why O'Brien was being pleasant to a leave voter. Then it became clear this was as O'Brien saw it a sinner who has repented. The man has an ego as big as mountain. I have no time for people who think those that disagree with them are stupid or need to be educated in the correct way, no attempt to persuade just patronising arrogance.

I have mixed feelings about the way that he argues with Leave voters.

On one hand it's pretty counter-productive and not really an argument (i.e. he's probably not going to win anyone over). It's a bit like listening to Dawkins talking about religion.

On the other hand it really is quite astounding how a few searching questions can reduce Leavers to incoherence. The reason I find this fascinating is that in the Thatcher era it was always the right-wingers who prided themselves on being hard-headed realists and the left who were supposed to be wooly sentimental thinkers.

But I do get the feeling he is into winning arguments at any cost (sometimes by fair means and sometimes by foul).

Well AGAIN let's look at it.

The MAJORITY voted to leave.

It is only the losing side trying to ignore that democratic vote, a referendum Mp's voted for.

You simply can not blame Leave for this mess.

bang on and i think it might backfire on them, they are hoping we either take the deal or revoke article 50, first time i've thought no deal was actually a possibility now

The reason that No Deal has always been a serious possibility is that No Deal is the default position, and if there is anything we have learnt over the last three years it's that the British establishment only knows how to do one thing, and that is nothing.

Two questions.

How will Bercow allow the WA motion to be tabled next week as the EU has said that, that is the agreement, nothing more nothing less ?

I was to believe that if the WA hadn`t been voted through by the 29th we would leave without a deal as it was written in law that was the end date ?

Ignore 2nd question

The Treaties shall cease to apply to the State in question from the date of entry into force of the withdrawal agreement or, failing that, two years after the notification referred to in paragraph 2, unless the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period

But when asked what question would be asked in a second referendum nobody in favour has said leave will be an option it's either the EU deal or remain.

Yeah it does seem unfair to move the goalposts for a second referendum.

Unless the goalposts were too wide to start with of course.

Should have been a 60/40 (leave/remain) referendum to start with for such a big decision.

And if you don't get 60/40 ?

We are back to square 1

Which is why there should not be another one.

Been watching Qtime
Someone said
It's not for Mp's to decide if we leave or remain.

They handed that decision to the people and the people with a majority voted to leave, their only job is to uphold that result.

From Mays lips this evening.

If you look back at what happened in the referendum, we saw the biggest democratic exercise in our history.
"And there was a clear result that we should leave. I think that it's important if we want to show that we can be trusted as politicians to respect a decision that we gave to the people.

"We didn't say, 'tell us what you think and we'll think about it'. We said, 'here's the vote, what is your decision and we will deliver on that'."

Voted Remain, I think the EU is great and I took part in the Erasmus exchange scheme when I was at uni.

A second ref would be stupid. Leave on no deal, if it's all fine then no harm, no foul. If it's shit then the UK will rejoin in 10-15 years having had it's stupid sense of invincibility cut down a bit.

I also voted remain and I've more or less come round to this view as well. I think our rejoining at some point down the road is inevitable, as I can't see our country isolating itself from the people who should be our natural partners and allies working out well. I really hope I'm wrong about that. However, if and when we rejoin we won't get the terms we currently enjoy. Next time round we'll have to do it fully - in the Schengen zone , adopt the Euro, lose the current budget rebate, to name the main opt outs we have now, and sign up to whatever political union might exist at that time.

At my age, I won't be around to see that but I'm grateful that for the majority of my working life we were in the EU.
