After the most inept first half i have seen for a long long time, that second half was breathless entertainment. Ok we lost, but that's what sport is all about - great stuff.

Jordan Cousins - flipping heck - he was a man possessed, more performances like that please. Leistner a rock when he came on. Smith - running on gas fumes, all heart.

Bring on Friday.

The officials, Maclaren and Nakhi Wells cost us the comeback in the end.

Maclaren's team selection not playing Leistner from the off. The officials for continuing the facade that Matt Smith is too big to let himself get failed and Wells for the point blank miss and the weak, weak peno.

Or maybe it was just the inept, insipid first half display. No pressing, no desire and no ball retention. In short, a flecking disgrace.

Can we go out yet?

I can't be too hard on Wells, he's been great for us this season. But you're bang on re the ref - utterly utterly woeful.

It was a dire penalty but that happens to all players occasionally. Bidwell maybe taps in the rebound if their guy isn’t two yards ahead when it’s taken.

I think McLaren will learn a lot from both halves today. Hopefully that if you’re relying on Lynch to be your defensive rock you’re asking for trouble.

Great to hear about Cousins. That spot in the side with Luongo is up for grabs.

The idea of leaving BFG out for Hall who is still recovering form and fitness, and Lynch who turns more slowly than Jupiter, proved to be ridiculous.

But I will say that McLaren's half time talk seemed to have a proper impact on the players. Cousins came on with a lot of self belief which I still think is the key ingredient for him. He's never going to have the passing of Pirlo but he can be very effective for us closing down space and connecting things up. Which seems more straightforward than whatever has happened to Scowen -again it seems that managers have to learn that playing him in a 4-4-2 doesn't work. But why wait till half time to change things?

Basically it was a really memorable and enjoyable second half that should never have been allowed to have got that stage in the first place.

Agree with that last line.

SMc even said the key to keeping the front two quiet is to not to let them bully you.

So surely BFG had to start in that case?

Wells - not just the pen he was off today - point blank miss but he also gave the ball away for fun in the first half, including for the corner that led to 3rd goal.

He's been ******* superb for us and was in tears at the end, so can't be too harsh, but no hiding the fact he was poor yesterday.

Maybe not against Watford but given our league season is just about done and dusted, perhaps go 3-5-2 for the remainder.

We definitely need 5 across midfield as we’re too weak and slow to play a 4 and cannot get any passes away. Pushing first Bidwell and Furlong further up, then Pav and Bidwell made a difference.

Smith only works if he’s got enough players forward to pick up knock downs/flick offs .

Thoroughly enjoyable game and credit to Birmingham who barely resorted to time wasting or rolling about holding their heads, an honest team and a credit to Monk.

Finally, that 90 odd minutes just about encapsulated 52 years of going to LR. Elated when that penalty awarded but you just knew what would happen next. Oh well.

That formation suits some players, notably the CBs and Furlong as a third CB. Pawel is a good fit for the right. Wells and Smith/Hemed yes.

Bidwell is never a wing-back and we have no one else for that role. You can’t really play Freeman and Eze unless you want Luongo to be likely overrun.

I’m not saying it’s the worst idea but there are flaws.

True. I think whatever formation we play to an extent it’s about covering up our deficiencies as actually stengthening the side.

Paul what’s your view on the encroachment by Brum players ? Should the pen have been retaken?
