More i see of it less i like it, that penalty decision tonight was an absolute joke and i say that as someone who wanted to see United win, it's supposed to help the game not decide it

If that had been up the other end the pundits on BT would be losing their minds, to be fair to them they have all said it's nonsense apart from the ref on there

great drama and all that and pleased they won as can't stand Neymar but that shouldn't even be looked at by VAR

I thought it was a pen TBF. Looked to me like Kimpembe knew exactly what he was doing. Gotta say for a neutral that was spectacular entertainment and you've also got to hand it to Ole - bringing on two teenagers when they still needed a goal to progress, that shows some mighty chutzpah! And Rashford's pen, under that pressure, was superb.

Terrible decision. The worst I've seen since the Australia pen awarded against Denmark in the world cup. Defender jumps to block shot, arm by his side, his back is turned. Was the shot even on target? Ridiculous.

That said, what a pen from Rashford. Nerveless. He did similar in the shootout v Columbia.

I agree with you about Rashford but as for OGS he literally had nothing to lose. His team is injury stricken and were right up against it after the first leg, meanwhile he's just an interim manager (for now) picking up the pieces of another. Mourinho masterclass. He brings them on and he just gives his usual speech about The Manchester United Way TM and gets plaudits. If he wins, and the subs had nothing to do with it, he receives even more.

as for the penalty... pffttttt... didn't feel like a handball to me. Commentators tell us that the party line is 'anything that makes the body bigger'... but what rules are these. The rules don't say anything about that. Handball rules are a mess but you can't change them mid-season without telling anyone - this is a lot more than a reinterpretation it's adding a completely new clause.

“The thing about football - the important thing about football - is that it is not just about football.”

I didnt even clock this game was even on until I just clicked on the BBC news app. Modern football is rubbish and good luck to modern fans, I just cannot see the enjoyment in it anymore. Ive been saying for years, the moment the "big clubs" fk off to a manufactured league in which they can argue amongst themselves about how they built irreverent, sponsored mega-super domes will be the best thing for football. .... boring

I want to know what happened to clear and obvious error?

That's what got it through the world cup reasonably successfully after a dreadful start but it seems to have been abandoned. The nonsense offside at Juve v Samporia, another ridiculous handball at the weekend Juve v Napoli, the farcical Southampton Derby game and that penalty last night are all caused by slowing the thing down frame by frame and trying to pick out the tiny marginal little thing that makes it not a goal. That's not what we were told it was there for, and not what it should be there for.

Rugby League got like that with the video a few years ago and they've tried to row back a bit from it because it ruins it, though it's still way too intrusive there.

The way I see it PSG got done by some kids at home after being 2-0 up, they should be looking at themselves on that.

Neymar, saying it hit the players back, is just rubbish.

I think the ref did not want to go against those watching it on VAR who clearly were saying it was handball, so they were giving the pen really, may as well get rid of refs and just have VAR

Was it handball?
As the player turns his back he is also jumping and looking over his shoulder so he is "half" looking at blocking the shot, so I think he was using his arm. Pen.

But that's just my opinion.

by the sound of it every penalty appeal is reviewed as well now.

Have said it before but should be you get 2 appeals a game and if you waste them then hard luck

This ^^^^

It’s got to be a clear and obvious mistake. If it’s borderline, you’ve got to stay with the referees decision all day long.

Goal line technology is absolutely brilliant, as it’s 100% accurate.

VAR should be used for blatant missed offside and blatant penalty decisions.

Diving should be retrospective with a 5 game ban for the first offence, then a 5 game ban and a 5 points deduction for your team for subsequent offences. That’d sort diving out.

Other ones to add to the list from this week.

1) Ajax having to wait for over 3 & 1/2 minutes to find out if one of their goals was allowed. The review was whether the ball had gone out for a throw in in the Ajax half.

2) Over a minute spent on deciding whether Roma should have had a penalty in the 120th minute. This could have been given, even though any contact was accidental and minimal (irrelevant I know). Nobody, other than referee's sat around a screen, would have looked at it for more than one second before dismissing the claim.

I can't comment on the Ajax goal that was disallowed by VAR, or the Porto penalty that was given by VAR as I didn't see them!

I think it's potentially a good idea but in it's current form, not a chance. If they try to force a system through that's not fit for purpose then football for a good few years is going to be completely different and much worse off.

Unless it can highlight a clear and obvious error and quickly and efficiently make the correct decision with near 100% certainty, we should scrap it altogether.

I've no problem with VAR, we all want to see correct decisions made and this will clearly help. I agree the system itself needs some evolution, but its still relatively early days.

So my issue isn't with VAR but the penalty itself. I just cant see how anyone can view that as an intended handball

...but that's a contradiction. VAR is't an automatic system, it's just a ref with a replay. It's still a ref. So now instead of a sht ref you've got a sht ref with a TV.

Which is why it won't help make correct decisions or end arguments or stop teams feeling they've been cheated. It'll just create new types of controversy.

To be fair, the commentator who knew the up to date laws of the game was pretty confident it was a penalty well before the decision had been made.

I don't know the exact law on handball but I gather it has been updated to penalise any unnatural arm movement that makes contact with the ball.

In that context, I can see why the penalty was given but it does seem harsh and maybe the law needs to be changed.

The law, or at least the interpretation of the law, is being changed for VAR coming in here next season. It's getting much, much harsher than the way we currently apply it here. You're going to see some laughable handball penalty decisions given in this country next season.
