U23's/Youth Team Suggestion 09:48 - Mar 28 with 2377 viewstoboboly

I go to non-league football every now and then and yesterday overheard some non-league super fans talking about Brentford B being in a Middlesex Senior Cup final. I looked it up and they enter their "B" team into all the non-league competitions going.

This got me thinking that QPR should do similar, would give them some hungry opposition to play, would ground them in terms of facilities and effort needed should they want to become a pro. Gives them a chance to play more competitive games and on a selfish note would give me more of a chance to watch them as often these games are weeknights.

Does anyone more au fait know why we don't do this and if there is a chance to ask the youth team coaches to consider it?

Brentford B currently have two finals coming up;

Brentford basically got tired of clubs like Man City and Arsenal picking off their teenagers for nothing under the dreadful EPPP regulations so closed the academy and set up this B Team set up instead, where they pick up fall outs from other academies at 18-21. Whether it works for them long term will only be known in time but they get some good games against good opposition. Smegma well placed to comment on all this.

Their "B" team have also played against teams from Bayern, Dortmund, Grasshoppers, Salzburg, Bresica, Rangers, Chiasso, New York, Aarhus, Malmo and Notre Dame. Games are arranged with Nice, Nazzario and Cambur they also play against English clubs but what an education compared to our U18 and U23 teams. Our teams have more than likely been playing against the same players since they were in Schools Football.

The old academy building.

I walk past this every day, it is situated in the grounds of Uxbridge High School where it borders with Brunel University. Must have cost a few bob.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Quite a lot of League clubs enter a tean in their counties cup.

Wycombe, MK Dons & (sometimes) Reading enter the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup for instance. Last season Chesham beat MK Dons in the final at that ground where Rangers are yet to win!

It always used to be the case that a League club had to pay a fee to the county not to enter.

Brentford B smashed both Chelsea and Manchester United under 23s at Griffin Park last season. They played Man City four times and didn't lose. All games are free.

As for our u23s playing cup games. I don't agree with Brentford B playing Wealdstone etc in the cup ...Brentford now play Harrow Borough in the final. At Griffin Park ??!! Not sure if you have to pay in.

I would like to see our u23s play in a cup against other pro u23 teams, just to make it a bit more exciting. Playing non league sides isn't fair.

The Academy boys have the FA Youth Cup of course but it's a nonsense. Chelsea youth lost to Man Utd in January. It was their first loss in the FA Youth Cup since losing in the final in 2013. They won it for the next 5 years and have appeared in the last 7 finals and 9 out of the last 11 as they basically hoover up any talent from the age of about 6.

I think the Hendon game is a tenner to get in.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't playing against non-league sides work to get them more proper game time?

It might benefit our players but the Middlesex Cup is for non league teams.

I would like to see this happen

Slight change of direction here but I still believe U23's is redundant. U18's , U21's fine. If you're not in the 1st team squad at 21 then release.

It's ridiculous to have 23 year olds getting a wage and not being ready for 1st team football.

Just my opinion.

But it isn't is it. Because Barnet entered when they were a league team and Brentford enter it.

I am not saying it should be a new Check-a-Trade, I am massively against that. But the rules clearly show that a QPR youth team would be allowed to compete, compete in meaningful games against hard opposition that would be completely new to them. I can only see it being beneficial to the kids.

Not sure I agree Oz. I can see clubs like QPR becoming a little more dependent on picking up late developers who get released by other clubs.
