Got caught up big time today in the climate change demo 16:54 - Apr 16 with 23984 viewsloftboy

All my deliveries were in W1, SW1 and SE1, drove past the shell building, it’s covered in graffiti, ended up with an hours overtime as it took me best part of two hours to get back to East London from Victoria.
So one big question, how is causing massive traffic jams good for the environment?
My company has just replaced its entire fleet of 100 vans with ultra low emission vans, all buses are now super green, so businesses seem to be doing their bit. Just seems senseless to me.

She’ll never stand for leader mate. Good as heads that from the horse’s mouth.

I've got a lot of time for RL-B. I've been at a good few events that she's spoken at or just attended, and I always get the impression that she's genuinely there to listen and learn from fellow activists, and that she genuinely sees her role as representing them. Someone from her local Momentum group told me she regularly attends that too.

Coincidentally my wife spoke to her in her lawyer days and confirms that she's lovely.

Yeah, god forbid.

In the same way, I don't want a doctor who knows anything about medicine or a numerate accountant.

Interesting that some of the most ardent Brexit supporters on here seem to be opposed to campaigning against climate change. The irony is that climate change is likely to result in mass migration for future generations.

I’m not opposed to campaigning I’m opposed to the method and length of the demo, should have been restricted to one day as most rallys are.

I think these words are the most important from that report though.....

"China is the world’s largest emitter and remains heavily dependent on coal.

However, the country’s plans to shift towards clean energy, led by concerns over the impacts of air pollution and climate change, as well as its keenness to expand in new markets, is also well underway."

i note they quote the rise in investment, but dont mention that 20% of that is wages and taxation which has for the last 5 years seen a rise every year in both. Once you take 1 billion people or more getting a raise every year plus taxes i wonder what the real figure for investment actually is?

My company has seen year on year raises, and then got hit by the HK$ and the US$ which a lot of companies over there require.

Like most of these reports i take them with a pinch of salt unless i can categorically say that their figures are correct.

Take wind turbines. renewable? right? yup?
cheap to build? nope! self funding? nope, not really
The real story never comes out. the carbon malarky needed to make just 1 windmill includes cars for workers going to and from work, the manufacture of the raw material, the transport of raw material, the machining of the raw material, the transport to where they need to be, which if out to see includes messing around with the marine environment, etc. Plus the generators are not as reliable as peeps think, and need changing out quite often.
But we dont hear that. We just hear ...... turbines good, trucks bad. (i agree on the latter by the way), but its all a green quoters 'red herring' if your willing to look and analyse the B.S. we are fed every day.

Electric cars? pah, useless at the moment. pricey too. Give it 10 years and when we've dug up half of wherever to get the rare metals for the batteries, they might go a decent range, and be cheaper, but what price the environment in the meantime? again transport by diesel etc etc.

I'm not sure of an answer to be honest, but it must be out there.

My electric car was manufactured using wind energy, many of the parts are made from recycled materials and the battery can be reused for electricity storage after the car is scrapped. Cambridge Uni physics professor David Mackey says there is no issue with lithium supplies and in any case, lithium-free zinc-air batteries are coming.

Onshore wind turbines are the cheapest source of new energy and *are* cost effective. They save many times more CO2 than is required to manufacture and install them. Many wind turbine parts can also be reused.

Offshore wind farms are also great for fish stocks because populations can recover in their no-take zones.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Professor Mackay bases his analysis on a lithium expert. He does also say that it can be extracted from seawater but I think that technique is at the experimental phase.

That's an interesting point. If they disrupt it and it doesn't go ahead that'll be some bad press headed their way. I've got a work colleague running it and she's doing it for a local hospice.

Still I guess we'll all need a hospice when the ozone layer is gone and we're all absorbing radioactive sunbeams.

Most of that data is 5/10/20 +years old

I've never been much of a climate change believer till the last 5 years other than mostly natural.

But you would have to be in the same group as the 3 monkeys to not realise, be it natural and or man-made things look pretty bleak if world temp's go above + 2 or 3C

It's best to refer to peer reviewed science.

This is a great source of information. It's not a pressure group, a load of environmentalists or anything like that, it's just people who study climate science: http://www.realclimate.org/
