Looking at surprising the wife this year and go to the fringe, are tips & advice welcome for trying to get to see the good comedy acts but also the unknowns, also for the music as well, when to book, hotel recommendations etc
Also while I am at it, I would love to go the Isle of Wight festival 2020. We don't do camping so any advice on hotels on the island. Cannot do this year as off to see Courteeneers & James in Manchester the same weekend.

Been to the Fringe a few times, love it. By breaking up the drinking when you go to watch a show it he has a decent break on getting too pissed built in.
The Pleasance Courtyard tends to have decent shows, the right mix of fairly well known and up and coming. I saw Rangers own Seann Walsh there any while back. There's usually a show that gets a buzz about it during the festival, which you just have to pick up on whilst you're there. There was a sketch show we saw one year, which isn't usually my thing, but which was brilliant. It was in a tiny upstairs room of a pub, and was absolutely rammed the night we went because word had got round.
Edinburgh is crazy expensive during the festival. No tips on getting round it unfortunately. We stayed in some student halls one year, but it was minging - the wardrobe literally smelt of piss. |  | | |

Thinking about decent free stuff, we saw some good free shows at the Three Sisters pub one year, which is pretty lively and just up from the Grass Market. We saw Janey Godley there one year, had me in pain from laughing so hard.
We've also seen some extraordinarily bad stand up by being talked in to going in to see a show by one of the 537 million flyers, but its all part of the fun i guess -- you never know if you're about to see the next Billy Connelly. | | | |

Have been a few times the last few years, nothing planned and no expectations. Just turn up, read the programs and see if there is anyone/anything we wanted to see. Half of the fun was just sitting out in the sun with a few beers waiting for people to come and pitch their shows, 9 times out of 10 you'd go along and it'd be average but then every now and then, there would be a gem. As mentioned above, the free shows with multiple comedians late at night were great for getting a taster too. Careful with getting too pissed too soon though, I stayed in some student accommodation a few years back and was so pissed, I kept getting up and pissing in the wardrobe.

We found the official fringe app brilliant.
As soon as you come out of a show you can search shows near me and you get a load of stuff within a short walk so can just hop from show to show. | | | |
